I have been burning games without an issue and playing them, but when I try them on my friends Xbox they get a dirty disc error or just won't load. He has some games which don't work on another friends Xbox and they have the exact same mod chip. Is there a known variation with Xbox drives or is this a burning issue?

There are 3 types of xbox drives

Thompson, philips and samsung.

Thompson is the weakest for cd-r but reads some dvd+r and some dvd-r
Philips reads some cd-r, some dvd-r and some dvd+r
The new philips drive reads cd-r, dvd-r and dvd+r without issue
Samsung reads almost any cd-r, almost any dvd-r but no dvd+r

Easy now to sort it out.

Thanks for the info, is it simple to tell the difference between the new and old Phillips drive, i.e. a model number or date stamp?

Due you know if it is possible to buy these drives so I could simply replace them?

You can identify the drives by opening the tray. (not sure if newer/older philips drives have different trays though)

You can buy the drives here.

And ive had great experiences buying from here also.

So far. ive com across pretty much all xbox drives.
All will read ritek/ridata dvd-r's and dvd+r's.
They all read the older memorex 4x dvd-r's (the ones in the blue packs), but some seem to have trouble with the newer memorex 8x dvd's cuz of them being a different media code or whatever its called.
