I ain't no crook.
But I ain't really a "mechanic" either. I'm just a dumb, old, muffler-man
Unfortunately, most "mechanics" have swollen egos nowadays, much like doctors. They think that, since they've gone to school for it, they have the right to treat the average person like shit. I've got more education/certifications than most mechanics that I know, but I realize that I'm only human and I am entitled to be wrong every once in a while. So long as I do my due diligence in repairing their vehicle, that is.
Most mechanics today don't do their due diligence, they merely hook up a scantool, read the codes, then replace whatever the DTC's lead to.
In my shop, for instance, we are constantly arguing with mechanics about proper catalytic converter functionality. The mechanics say that the converter plays no part in maintaining proper stoichiometry. Those mechanics are idiots, and it shows.
Hopefully, you get your problem sorted, but if you don't, be certain and tell everyone you know not to go to that garage. Word of mouth can really hurt a person's business.
