Well I understand they're non-profit, and I admired the idea the first time, but cmon, every year? I don't like them begging for money every now and then. And every time they reach their goal. Can't they become independent some way?

Dude. Just drop it. They're ad-free and host one of the best concepts on the Internet. The fact that they ASK for money for something that essentially is one of the most used tools on the Internet instead of charging it (like they could've) says enough about them. Their philosophy on information is exactly the one I'd like to see widespread.

So please... cut them some slack.

I really don't see the problem.
Just ignore them if you're not willing or unable to pay (that's what I do). o.O

I am cutting them a slack. I know they're cool and all, but still I don't agree with the way they do it.

They claim they have 500 employees, so that alone is a big budget, not counting servers, internet, electricity..

So you know that they have a lot of employees, server power and generally costs, but yet you see them as beggars?

My issue is not that they ask for money, it's that they ask for more money every year.

They put up a small message at the top of the page with an option to close it and not see it again. How would you like them to do it?

There are a lot of companies with pages in wiki for themselves or their products, hell some of them with their own wikis. Why not seek some payment from them. Or some kind of corporate fundraisers.

I don't know. I have no idea of their current business model, and I have never stumbled upon any information about it either. I would like to know that.

Because anyone can put up a wiki... why go after a corporation and not the little guy? you go after the big dogs they will bite down hard and then half the wiki will be censored and closed off... or you'll have to pay to access any EA game info. [it should never come to that]

It's a brilliant service that I would love to see the governments fund. Much like CBC or BBC. If it wants to go the publicly funded way, PBS, that's awesome... no restraints and they continue doing what they continue doing, no ties to anything... but such services used world wide should seek funding from governments. It's a service everyone uses. They're working on it for free. All 500 employees are volunteers. People needs to get paid. Cause most of the wiki editors don't have a second job. which is stoopid.

It could / should expand if it were to get government funding. or ffs their servers / hosts shouldn't charge them. I will never understand why charities have to pay to rent out halls to feed the homeless or destitute people. That's really rotten. Or they have to pay for airlines to deliver food to the 3rd world. Neutral like... wtf world? HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU NEED!?

[And then people complain when charities take a small percentage of the donations to stay afloat and actually provide the need and care the donations are meant for]

They either pay, or the owner will find someone else who will. Otherwise the owner would be running a charity for the charity.

Wikipedia was there a long time before they started asking for money, so they do have some alternative means of gathering money. Was it funding or internet traffic. But yes, they are providing a service to the whole humanity, and a good service indeed. Try to get some UN funding?

Lol. Sad it saddens me that this is the truth. Laughing

StrEagle because one idiot put most of his money on the project and was able to fund it until he ran out of disposable income? Then it grew bigger and bigger and bigger and it needed a staff. The staff worked for free. Still works for free. To help a cause. And now every year they need to pay for expenses. Simples. Look they aren't begging for money for themselves. they're begging for money to continue to run the service.

Wikipedia is one of the happy corners of internet in my view. Open transparent easy to access information Site have all of us have used and benefited from.

I don't care if they ask for money or start putting up ads, just don't shut down and I'm happy.

Guess what - I agree.

How is this even a thing to complain about? They shouldn't even be at a place where they NEED to ask for money - if everyone who uses Wikipedia donated just ONE dollar a year (which everyone who uses Wikipedia can), they wouldn't ask for money on the site.

And let's be honest, full unrestricted, unlimited access to Wikipedia is worth a lot more than $1 a year..

Some people live in fantasy worlds... ever heard of server costs? And guess they don't want to make wikipedia an ad fest. Would loose its credibility.
