Developer Deck13, the studio behind Lords of the Fallen, has come out with some details for its follow-up game The Surge. The Surge takes place in a dystopian future where the world's climate is on the brink of destruction and mega-corporations use robotics to try and preserve what is left of it.
Quote:
The story pulls from contemporary political concerns—things like climate change, bio-electronics, augmentation, and the "increasingly creepy role of mega-corporations"—and uses them to create an equally realistic and eccentric tale that "might remind you more of BioShock than Dark Souls."

The main character walks around in an exoskeleton that has partially made biological modifications to his body

There won't be a lot of guns or ranged combat in The Surge despite its futuristic setting. The player, in fact, initially doesn't have any weapons at all but instead crafts makeshift ones from tech he finds on his journey. Even when ranged combat figures in later, it merely supports the core emphasis on "powerful, duel-like combat" rather than dominating it
Quote:
A heavy emphasis on dismemberment. It's not just for a gory show, either. As one of the game's main methods of character progression, it'll also allow players to target specific limbs on the enemies they encounter and use them to create new modifications for the exoskeleton.

The Surge is still very much in the spirit of Dark Souls.
Quote:
There will be an even greater focus on discovering shortcuts and revisiting previous locations than we saw in Lords of the Fallen.
Deck13 CEO and creative director Jan Klose Interview:
I don't like the combat in this video.. and wtf is he talking about? lol
He doesn't say anything too important but, in a nutshell:
- You can aim to different limbs/parts of the body and cut them off to steal enemies' weapons
- Timing is vital when doing combos and you can't just press a button expecting to win
- The structure is very similar to LoF, with life chambers replacing the red checkpoints (you will lose multipliers and even equipment at times)
Not too inspired, but not too shabby either
Here's hoping the big D will be a thing of the past once the game will be released.
As a big souls fan I couldn't stand Lords of the Fallen. Generic world, generic characters, generic bosses, generic story. Combat was too slow and boring to me too, too little crappy magic and too little variety in terms of classes and weapons.
Maybe they'll improve here but I won't get my hopes up. I don't think these devs can do it.
That said, I wouldn't mind being proven wrong by an amazing game.

i think ds3 has kinda ruined me a bit on these kinds of games. i watch the guy evade one attack and then just rush in and button spam until kill animation, all the time im cringing and expecting hes going to get punished as fuck, only to then remember that this is what gaming is usually like.
i feel like i woulda loved this a lot more if id seen it earlier this year
Looks pretty fun to me While LOTF wasn't THAT great, I did enjoy it (except those times where it crashed during boss fights ) so looking forward to this.
the problem with this game and lotf is that they always compare it to dark souls themsleves.
Dont rival a game that you cant btea in any aspect. The most important the game mechanics arent even close up to par

Weird, because you just described the best tactic in most of non-boss Dark Souls 3 combat. Stunlocking, ahoy!
There are obviously a few near-infinite poise enemies here and there(mostly toward the end), but most of the(again, not counting bosses) enemies can be beat by just mashing light attack.
In any case, was DS3 your first Souls game? Just curious.
“The LIQUIDATOR, featured in the first screenshot, is fitted with industrial attachments for use in areas prone to hazardous material spillage. Built around the slogan “quality protective gear for the safest workplace”, the Liquidator offers super-human resistance to radiation, fire, and toxic spills, with mobility aided by the exo-skeleton.

The second screenshot features CREO’s PROTEUS medium physical protection armor set. An experimental set equipping certain of CREO’s security personnel, the PROTEUS is an advanced and light-weight armor granting a small health regeneration effect. It also only needs medium core power cost allowing for a little extra juice for implants.

This last screenshot features a mix of armor sets. LYNX was developed for workers requiring speed, flexibility, and precision. Far from standard issue, few CREO workers would benefit from its inherent advancements in hydraulics. It features low core power cost, but this comes at the cost of physical and elemental protection against radiation and other environmental hazards. We also see elements of MG GORGON and BLACK CERBERUS armors, designed for heavy security and riot control actions.”
