|
 |
My sister has quite a big house and she's having problems with wireless internet. The floor the router is on, is fine, but the second floor has a very weak signal. The router is good enough, so that shouldn't be the problem. The wireless touter now is behinf\d a simple modem, the router handles DHCP and whatnot. Can I connect a second router behind the first router and put it on the upper floor? So each floor will have a separate router. I'll disable DHCP on the second router so the first router will do everything.
So it'll be: modem (first floor) --> first router (first floor) --> second router (second floor).
How do I handle the LAN/WAN connections in such a case?

How do I connect them? The first router is connected via the WAN port, since it handles DHCP and whatnot. Should I make a LAN/LAN connection between router one and router two?
Is it possible to have one big wifi field if I give both routers the same SSID? So the laptop/phone/whatever should connect to router 1 when on the first floor and router 2 when on the second floor. Can that be done automagically?
I actually wanted to use both routers as simple APs/extenders, but I can't access any advanced options on the modem.

This is from my router a copy/paste of the bridge section:
Quote: | Bridge (or named WDS - Wireless Distribution System) function allows your RT-N66U to connect to an access point wirelessly. WDS may also be considered a repeater mode. But with this method, the devices connected to the access point will only be able to use half of the access point's original wireless speed. |
btw, you don't need to access advanced features on your modem to be able to setup a bridge, this is handled from the router. Edit: nvm, you need to add the MAC adres..
Why not let one of the routers handle the wifi? Fuck the (ziggo?) modem and then let the second extend the first?
for pure cable, just hook the second router in 1 of the ports of the first router, then disable DHCP there so it won't conflict with router 1, if correctly, router 1 DHCP should handle router 2 DHCP aswell (altho it might sound easier then it is in reality).
You could use different subnets, but in my personal experience, it conflicted with connecting to pc's on the first router (unless you only want them all to have internet and not be connected with eachother).
Shame you live so far, otherwise i could had hopped by and helped you.

It's not the Ziggo modem I am used to, it's a shitty thing without wifi and one ethernet port (their old modems maybe?). I can't do anything on that modem. The first router handles everything now, from wifi to ethernet to DHCP. I'll try disabling DHCP on the second router and make a LAN/LAN connection between router 1 and router 2.

Then the second router should be able to bridge that wifi without too much hassle, forget all about the modem in the equation

You don't need a second router for this.
Go with: modem (first floor) --> first router (first floor) --> switch (second floor).
EDIT: Just realized you probably want wi-fi access on the second floor as well. My proposed solution isn't suitable then.
EDIT2: Buy something like this http://www.asus.com/Networking/EAN66 for the second floor.

I just recently had to buy a wireless extender (similar to what White Barbarian posted), and it allows the DHCP on my router to assign addresses even when connected to the bridge. Of course, most of my equipment has statically assigned addresses (it's amazing how many things most people have that are connected to the internet) so that I can enable/disable that specific device's internet access and/or port forward (security cameras, WOL functionality for my computers, minecraft server, etc.).
But, yeah, get a wireless bridge, it'll be much less of a hassle than setting up two routers...usually.

Huh, why is it a hassle to do so?
Here look how easy the config page is to setup the extender on my router....

I'll be using my old router for the second floor. It was a cheap one, so I hope it has a bridge mode.
