Not at all, the points Saint and Frant were discussing ended when frant said he was over it. The only thing the thread would have had left was bashing flaming and yet more stupidity getting even more people riled up.
It was closed in due time. Almost no one was adding anything of worth to the thread at that point other than everyone trying to push their own opinions on how the forum should be.
I just dont get how Frant could not have understood that stupid repetition joke. (Or did he? In which case ...)
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

hey, our german ancestors defeated the roman empire and conquered it.
The romans defeated themselves, by the time the gothic tribes managed to defeat the remaining roman armies and sack Rome, the whole Western Roman Empire was a mere broken shell of its former self. They certainly played their part in the overall decline, but claiming all the credit is just nonsense.
Rome had lost much of its significance at that point, and they only really ended one half of the remaining empire. ERE remained and of course later became the Byzantines.
So yes, the germanic barbarian hordes made the killing blow, but it was more of a mercy killing than some glorious victory of the evil empire at that point. One of the most interesting subjects in history, really - especially since they'll never be able to agree on just how exactly the decline happened and the major factors involved.
Then Vikings rose in the 8th century and spread around the word, from Constantinople to Canada, settled and founded villages in Britain, Ireland, France, Iceland, Faroese Islands, founded the Kievan Rus lands (the foundation of Russia and Ukraine) and owned the main river between the baltics to the black sea etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
This shows settlements by Vikings (green only shows raids) where DNA traces and traces of varangians (continental name of scandinavian vikings).
yeah and it lasted a whole 3-4 centuries and then they were absorbed by everyone else
Not quite. They affected the countries they settled in, esp. England and Scotland. Many words, some cultural influences etc. still stick till today.
And what a couple of bearded norsemen left behind was a legacy that we can still see in many places they settled in one way or another, from the name of the town to some particular traditions in various places.
It wasn't a Viking empire, it was Vikings settling and affecting the culture, language etc. wherever they went.
Personally I think it was quite an effort for a people (because it wasn't a kingdom, nor an empire in any way in Scandinavia, it was clans and kings over small groups of vikings either working together or fighting each other while having time to build that times best ships and exploring, conquering, raiding and settling wherever they landed).
As I said in another thread, I think it's interesting and it's sad that Christianity came and ruined it all.
