I have a new house and it's a bitch to get an ethernet cable upstairs. I'm looking to buy a wifi device for my desktop PC, but I don't know whether to get a USB device or a PCI device. Now logic would dictate PCi is better and should get better speeds, is this correct? My modem is good so it should pull off 7.5MB/s via wifi, is it reasonable to expect this from a PCI or USB wifi device?

The problem with a lot of the USB Wifi dongle things is that they have overheating issues. You also can't really use them outside of Windows without a lot of work.

I've had better experiences with PCI and PCIe 1x wifi. It may depend on the device, but my USB dongle just had very bad reception compared to the TP-Link WDN4800 I use atm.

USB also has that CPU overhead or whatever it's called too. Basically USB has to wait in line to be processed by the cpu if I remember correctly.

+1, I have one for 3 years now, and it's still doing great. And I didn't put it outside lol.

Just my opinion but I'd rather spend a little time setting up an access point. That way my connection isn't dependent on drivers and windows to work correctly.

That would be the best solution, but a decent AP with ethernet ports costs around 70 euros. That's a bit steep for me since a good PCI wifi thingie costs 25 euros.

Thanks guys, I'll go for PCI (e) then. What speeds do you guys get with the WDN4800?

My Internet connection maxes out at 30 Mbits and I have no problem getting that speed in Steam downloads for example.

I do not push many files from device to device over the WiFi network, so I could not say the maximum possible speed. It would be dependent on the router and the other device aswell.
