On a global scale, the PC gaming market appears has surpassed the console gaming market when it comes to revenue. This is according to DFC Intelligence owner David Cole who spoke to PCR about the market research company’s findings.
A reason for this shift is that, Cole explained, “Among core gamers there is a heavy overlap with most console gamers also playing on a PC. The big difference is that consoles are now the luxury item and PCs are the necessity. Just a few years ago the reverse was true. This means PCs have the broader audience.”
DFC predicted, back in January, that the PC market would exceed $25 billion for 2014 and, according to their prediction back in 2011, that its revenue would surpass console gaming. One of the reasons why PC gaming revenue has passed that of console gaming has to do with the popularity and success of the MOBA genre.
According to Cole, “The MOBA games League of Legends and Dota 2 dominate everything else by an order of magnitude in terms of more usage than other products. In the first part of 2014 we saw some signs that may change with the introduction of new titles and increased play of games outside the MOBA category.”
While the MOBA genre has risen to dominance, Cole also attributed the MMO, strategy, and first-person shooter genres for PC gaming’s growth as well. In addition, the European market has been a big factor for PC trends when it comes to free-to-play games.
Will PC gaming continue to outgrow console gaming in terms of revenue? Or will the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 push console gaming ahead?

My cousin keeps inviting me to play dota 2. I just can't see myself learning every possible combination of items possible just to be .2 seconds faster than my enemy.

This. As someone who plays on both (preferring pc when mine can run the game in question decently) it's a sad state of affairs when free-to-play microtransactions cash-cows like LOL are the spearheads of PC gaming.
Nothing against people who play them, but they're the death of gaming as a narrative and artistic medium imho.

i promise after 20 games or so it will be the most fun game you had in ages (lately games have become really limited and algorithmic - i have been playing them (not quite hardcore) for last 22+ years). Why - because there are zillions of combinations how to make tactics in dots 2, there is no one best definitive way how to win, each time you play you think of smth new (based on your team and skill synergies). You don't need to be piano master of pc keyboard to succeed in this game (i can tell from myself - i know how to use wasd but not much more ), timing is important, but not the time in which you press keys (except for some few heroes). You don't need even to learn combination of items or which skills to pick when, just take some pre made skill/item tree (available in game).
The main advantage - much less algorithmic gameplay - each game there is smth new, you must think how to use synergies to attack and defend and counter.
Sure sometimes there are bad teammates, but overall maybe 1 in 5 games or so, and if you play with your real life friends in one team its double fun. |
Not to be a dick but if your writing style is representative of the average DOTA player I really do not want to play. Seriously though reading that was physically uncomfortable, the inconsistency in the use of capital letters was probably the worst.
DOTA is perfect for the casual gamer and can still be used for e-sports, it is to be expected.
I can't imagine millions of people playing Dominions 4 MP by emailing turns to the host.

MOBAs are to current 15-year olds what CS 1.6 was to us ten years ago. Let's just face it, we are a bunch of grumpy old men who lost connection to the youth trends.

I class MOBA players in the same category I put people in that still think Counter-Strike, Starcraft, World of Warcraft, Team Fortress 2, Hearthstone, Garry's Mod and the like hold any relevance whatsoever.
These are what I like to term "idiot-sponge" games, whose only purpose is to soak-up and keep entertained the mindless masses so that the rest of (and rightful) PC Gaming Master Race can play our games in peace. 
It's nice that we finally get some attention, but this is definitely NOT a positive thing for PC gaming to be seen in this light.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Translation: flavor of the month bandwagons for top players, newbs that win or lose games for entire teams, and imbalance for the massive middle tier of players who actually believe they move up or down the ladder from "tactics" rather than hotkeys and memorization of counters.
The problem is the modern "geek culture" as I like to call it of people who are finally catching up with the ideas of the Enlightenment from several centuries ago (and yet think they are "artistic" and "knowledgeable") and think they're intelligent because they have OCD, and feel funny or cute because of overly fond pet-love or other obsessive qualities that no one gives two shits about, but due to the prevalence of social media are actually becoming popular and feeling empowered. The result is a shit-ton of casual PC game players who have absolutely 0 taste for what made anything great in the past who are too stupid to realize that what they're embracing is watered-down, spoon-fed crap generated from the same greedy corporations they pretend to rally against in their "green" Prius and proto-vegetarian BS that is nothing but a repeat of the 70's.
