|
 |
I'm planning on throwing my old Phenom I Quad (9750 @ 2,4ghz) out and get something more powerfull. So far,i think i shouldn't buy AMD again since everyone that bought a Bulldozer is complaining about it and i doubt that a Phenom II 965 is "enough" nowadays.
I can't decide between an Intel i5 3570 or the 3570K Version,my guess would be that the K version might serve me longer IF i intend to overclock (but i'm not really looking forward to it,with my luck it just burns a hole trough my Case). All i want is to be safe,gaming- performance wise and maybe record/stream while playing (i hope thats possible with that CPU).
Is there a cheaper/better sollution?Maybe a CPU without integrated GFX (wouldn't use that anyway)?I didn't follow the hardware development at all :/
Currently using a 6870 GPU but that gets replaced in a few months
So,humpers, wat do?Any input would be appreciated

Not possible. There's so many safeguards in place that you really have to do something extreme to make it melt. Long before it gets there it will do any of: throttle, undervolt, reboot, shutdown.
Get the 3570K and overclock it. You don't even need insane amounts of cooling for these things, they all hit 4.2 GHz or so with just about any aftermarket air cooler. That'll serve you for the next few years.

3570k is a fantastic cpu.
But if You migh find 2500k for decent price GET IT. It is astonishingly good. clocks very easily to 4.4 even on not too expensive cooling.
Dont expect oc on stock cooling tho
edit: One note. i remember reading that IVY bridge - especially 3570k had terrible thermal grease (inside under metal cover).
Don't know if it was bad batch or what tho

I would also opt for the K, I did a lot of research before purchasing mine, and I never intended to overclock really, but I ended up getting the K version of my CPU and I'm very glad I did. Now that I've caught the overclocking bug, it's fun and very satisfying.
Yes, the intel heatsink is absolute shit. I guess it would be fine if your going to be running on stock settings. It would be worth getting a cheap heatsink (they have decent ones for $20, check the TX3) just to keep it cooler and prolong the life of the CPU and at least you'll have the option for a mild OC if you happen to want to do that in the future. Also arctic silver 5 is alright and not too expensive.

Guys, thanks for the answers so far.
If OC'ing this CPU is really that easy i might stick with the 3570k and slap a "be quiet! Shadow Rock TopFlow SR1" on top of it,hope that keeps it "cool".
Kinda strange that the boxed version of the CPU is just 2 bucks more than without the stock-fan

It is really easy. Not sure with 3570k. But sandy Bridge ... just up the multiplayer and off ya go.

Its simple... If you have monster cooling get Ivy Bridge (10-15c higher temps than on sandy Bridge). They also generally overclock badly compared to SB. Performance increase also compared to SB is not worth the heat, since in real world scenarios, you cant notice difference. Only thing what i can think of for recommending Ivy is if you want "strong" integrated graphics, thats it.

overclocking isn't as easy as some make it out to be. well, yes, you can do it in 5 minutes using automatic presets, or copying settings from someone else, but that's a messy overclock, and you'll probably produce more heat than needed.
to do a quality overclock (especially at 4.5Ghz+) that doesn't unnecessarily rape your cpu with too much voltage and such takes time. it took me about a week to get perfect overclock settings for my 2500K, running bunch of 24h+ prime95 torture tests and so on.

well, let's say i do not want to overclock, would the regular 3570 be enough to be playing with good FPS (im looking at you,ArmA2 & 3) for a while or would it be a waste of money ?
edit: scratch that, this question answers itself.you almost get 1ghz more "for free" with a 3570K.k,need to sell my cats

If you are on budget and dont wanna overclock, you might wanna check out Xeon E3-1230V2. Its basically same as stock 3770K but you cant OC it and it doesnt have integrated graphics. That costs about 200€, which is steal for 4 cores + 4 threads.

If you want to do recording/streaming you might want to consider i7 (3770K) instead of i5. Extra 4 virtual cores can yield up to ~50% performance boost with heavily multithreaded applications, and compression and encoding software you will be using for recording/streaming falls into that category.

Haswell is gonna be minor upgrade over ivy bridge, easily can be matched with overclocking. Its like same as SB -> Ivy, which cant be seen in real world benchmarks. I can say for sure that even SB packs so much punch that it will last for years. Im not gonna swap my 2700K @ 5Ghz for a long time, upgrade must be like Phenom II -> SB, then its gonna be worth it.

Just get the 3570K, and good cooling + overclock it to 4.3-4.5Ghz levels and you are set. If i were you i would check into 2500K aswell, has better overclockability in general.

Haswell is indeed not going to be a big jump, Haswell's the big mobile improvement.
And I'll say it again, I'm still on an i5-760 which was released in July 2010 as a minor speed bump over the September 2009 i5-750 and I have absolutely no reason to upgrade. Nothing gets anywhere near maxing this thing out, let alone SB/IB - provided you overclock.
