“The Legend of Zelda,” one of the most popular videogame series of all time, is in the works as a television show at Netflix.

The video streaming service is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda,” about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue a princess named Zelda and save a fantasy world called Hyrule, said a person familiar with the matter. As it seeks writers to work on the show, Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience, this person said.

The “Zelda” games have traditionally included swords and sorcery, like “Game of Thrones” or “Lord of the Rings,” but typically with a more light-hearted, kid-friendly tone.

Netflix is said to be working closely with Nintendo, the Japanese game developer that has made about 20 “The Legend of Zelda” games since the original, which was released in the U.S. in 1987.

Nintendo is very protective of its intellectual property and has allowed few adaptations over the years. An animated “Legend of Zelda” series ran for just one season in 1989. A 1993 movie based on Nintendo’s “Super Mario Bros.” was an infamous bomb.

As it is still seeking a writer to work on the series, Netflix has a long road to travel before a “Legend of Zelda” series actually becomes a reality. It’s also possible that Netflix or Nintendo will kill the project before it gets off the ground.

A Netflix spokeswoman declined to comment. A Nintendo spokesman said the company “doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation.”

I'll be very surprised if this ever becomes a reality.

They need a writer.
They need a story.
They need a producer.
A director
A cast
A style
A tone

Lol

I'm surprised Netflix and nintendo are both in cahoots on this. Netflix doesn't seek ventures. They come to Netflix. So nintendo went to Netflix and went all here we need to bring Zelda to more people...

only thing that can fuck this up is if they follow suit of the games.

It should be simple, dark, full on adventure...

I posted my tots on this on neogafs... Story of a boy becoming a hero and leading an army against the evil.

They could go all political on this... They could do a modern retelling... Link as a cop in New York searching for a missing girl. She's kidnapped by a strange cult. Link of course is not like any cop he always has a lucky charm with him. Later in the series when link infiltrates the cult you get this whole real life dark magic shit.

all they need is

 Spoiler:

EDIT: you know, just thinking about it now, if they followed the example of neverending story, with creepy creatures and an eerie atmosphere, they could pull off a family friendly show with a young main character without getting too childish.

please dont make this become another super mario bros. super show

Can we, please, have a story about a boy whose long fight against Evil leads him on a darker path of understanding that the world is not all black and white, that some actions especially the ones done for the greater good have severe consequences, that sometimes Evil does prevail and sometimes we have to let it prevail, that sometimes sacrifices have to be made and sometimes "good people" will hate you for that..well and stuff like this Laughing

link finally beats ganondorf and gets to zelda's prison cell, but its too late, she has already been raped by the bosses of each elemental temple, broken and only a mere shadow of her former self, staring at link with a soulless gaze she mutters one last sentence: "i-i knew you d come...".
shortly after, she collapses to the cold ground and enters the eternal sleep.

The Zelda story is pretty good, but you have to look at the big over arching story across the games. The stories within specific games aren't that great.

If they did a show I hope they do it right and focus on the big picture. Transition between old link, young link, and bring it all together. If they do this it'll be a good show. If they don't it will suck.

I find it very basic and full of cliche. Netflix should use the source material as a basis and modify it intensively for TV IMO.
