has anyone an idea why 3dsmax4 doesn't work on xp ?
is there a patch that fixes this problem ?

If it aint a patch at the official site I would guess that your version is so old that it aint supported anymore. 3d studio max is currently at v7 and the makers Discreet have been bought by Autodesk (Autodeks 3d studio Max). Maybe you should try getting the release of v7 instead?

why use max4 when studio max 7 is out. (plugins maybe:?)

try updating it:

http://www.discreet.com/support/max/download/download.php3
and select 3ds max 4.x
