I honestly do not understand how publishers and developers can put their games on dvd9 when not even all ps2 models support it.
It's extremely stupid, and especially when it's big games like gt4 that almost everyone wants to play, but cant if they have an older ps2.
And who the hell would want to go out and buy another ps2 just for a handful of games when normal games work just perfect on the older machine they have.....

I know I know, not really what the thread was about, but man, I think it sucks and I'm not even one of those that care for these games, it just sucks badly Smile

That's not what I have seen and read. Some very old models can have some serious problems to get it running.
Ofcourse this can be bullshit (maybe it's just bad lasers all these people have) since I haven't experienced it myself, but since I have read it so many times, there must be some thruth behind it?

Well, in most cases, they put it on a DVD9 because it won't FIT on a DVD5. Would you rather them skimp out on content to fulfill your DVD-R burning needs?

Ever heard of 2 dvd 5's? Wink
Some games are put on 2 dvd5's (xenosaga being the latest) and there must be a reason behind that. I doubt it's a cost issue.

And you completley missed my point.
I dont care about these games, which means I wont get them, I just feel for all those that want them the legit way but might get problem because it's dvd9.

yea its true that many models cant play dvd9s or atleast have major probs while loading, including my old ps2 i sold off.
the thing is , rpgs like shadow hearts 2 or xenosaga 2 can be split up without probs on 2 dvds, cuz there are for example cutscenes which dont repeat themselves later on, or generally stuff you cant do anymore later on.
in gt4 its different, you dont have any game progress as in rpgs there, you can basically choose to drive what you want where you want and there are no cutscenes, so you d basically have to swap the dvds every time you choose a certain car or certain stage, which would be annoying, remember playing street fighter 2 as a 4 disk version on the old amiga 500? exactly.

They would just have to do a different approach, like making it smaller by not having so many cars, for example. Sure it wouldn't be as nice but everyone would atleast be able to play it on their ps2, as they shuld be, and it would still have a sick amount of cars to please everyone. Sometimes you have to do some sacrifices to please everyone, and everyone that has a ps2 shuld be able to play every ps2 game, simple as that.

Or sony shuld let all these people swap their old ps2 model to a new one, for free, so they can enjoy all games without the need of having two ps2's. Smile

He meant split as in put on 2 disc's, not split as in ripped from a dvd9 and put on 2 disc's Smile

Well, I can see where you're coming from with the two DVD5 thing. And this approach is great for RPGs and other linear storyline-intensive games.

However, this doesn't work as well for games such as Gran Turismo 4. I would hate to be switching disks everytime I went to certain courses or certain manufacturer shops. I'm not sure how much room GT4 takes up on the disk, so there's no telling how much they'd have to rip to get the game to fit on a DVD5. If it were a couple cars, then no big deal, but I somehow doubt that is the case.

Original dvd9 work in every console... 99% of the movie market is dvd9 and all movies run smoothly on a Ps2. It´s a dvd player...

the problems starts when you try to burn them into dvdr dl....

This doesn't have anything to do with older models of the PS2 or any modchips, the dvd drive in the PS2 is simply very very bad. And it sure didn't get better as Sony decided to manufacture newer PS2 models with even worse components.

CDs and DVD9 are two things the PS2 struggles to read. My PS2 got trouble reading cds after just a single month. And because of that there's many games I can't play at all. I'm using HDLoader whenever possible since I know it'll be read without problems and it reduces loading times as well.

I have a hard time understanding how a racing game would use about 8gb, a racing game surely can't be stuffed with tons of pre-rendered cutscenes? And track and car data would surely take some space, but I can't see it taking over 4gb. I just hope these DVD9 games aren't incompatible with HDLoader, that way people don't need to bother with these DVD9 discs.

Looks like you dont have to worry about dvd9 when it comes to kessen anymore.
They just released a DVD5 version with nothing ripped, just some downsampled things.
Kessen_III_USA_PS2DVD5-PARADOX to be exact. Smile

Yes nothing is ripped, they just downsampled movies.
Downsampling means that they made the movies in worse quality than on the dvd9, but not that bad that it makes them impossible to watch. Smile
