That's not what I have seen and read. Some very old models can have some serious problems to get it running.
Ofcourse this can be bullshit (maybe it's just bad lasers all these people have) since I haven't experienced it myself, but since I have read it so many times, there must be some thruth behind it?

Well, in most cases, they put it on a DVD9 because it won't FIT on a DVD5. Would you rather them skimp out on content to fulfill your DVD-R burning needs?

yea its true that many models cant play dvd9s or atleast have major probs while loading, including my old ps2 i sold off.
the thing is , rpgs like shadow hearts 2 or xenosaga 2 can be split up without probs on 2 dvds, cuz there are for example cutscenes which dont repeat themselves later on, or generally stuff you cant do anymore later on.
in gt4 its different, you dont have any game progress as in rpgs there, you can basically choose to drive what you want where you want and there are no cutscenes, so you d basically have to swap the dvds every time you choose a certain car or certain stage, which would be annoying, remember playing street fighter 2 as a 4 disk version on the old amiga 500? exactly.

the true rlz in shop is a 2dvds one, like the japanese one used to be.

Well, I can see where you're coming from with the two DVD5 thing. And this approach is great for RPGs and other linear storyline-intensive games.
However, this doesn't work as well for games such as Gran Turismo 4. I would hate to be switching disks everytime I went to certain courses or certain manufacturer shops. I'm not sure how much room GT4 takes up on the disk, so there's no telling how much they'd have to rip to get the game to fit on a DVD5. If it were a couple cars, then no big deal, but I somehow doubt that is the case.

Original dvd9 work in every console... 99% of the movie market is dvd9 and all movies run smoothly on a Ps2. It´s a dvd player...
the problems starts when you try to burn them into dvdr dl....

This doesn't have anything to do with older models of the PS2 or any modchips, the dvd drive in the PS2 is simply very very bad. And it sure didn't get better as Sony decided to manufacture newer PS2 models with even worse components.
CDs and DVD9 are two things the PS2 struggles to read. My PS2 got trouble reading cds after just a single month. And because of that there's many games I can't play at all. I'm using HDLoader whenever possible since I know it'll be read without problems and it reduces loading times as well.
I have a hard time understanding how a racing game would use about 8gb, a racing game surely can't be stuffed with tons of pre-rendered cutscenes? And track and car data would surely take some space, but I can't see it taking over 4gb. I just hope these DVD9 games aren't incompatible with HDLoader, that way people don't need to bother with these DVD9 discs.

GT4 isn't 8GB, the TOC is around 6GB.
