so i got my 660ti and ... i get some serious issues with the drivers. I uninstalled the drivers and cleaned them (sweeper) but as soon as i install new ones, i cant boot into windows anymore. Well, actually, i can, except the screen turns black after the "starting windows" logo.

I was able to actually to start and get into windows normally (and even run 3dmark lol), so i am pretty certain, it isn't hardware related (not gpu anyway) but it could be my screen , maybe ? I remember having this issue with my old gpu as well and on totally different hardware (old setup), just never to this degree (i reinstalled the damn drivers like 20 times .. not like that would make any difference anyway lol).

Anyhow, maybe someone knows this issue and can help me out Smile

btw, my old gpu had the same issue, except it would "recover" right away and the screen would only go out for a second and then comes back. Not with the new gpu however.

(like when driver stops working or something). Really weird.

The screen is turning black when the driver loads. Does the same thing happen with older drivers?

Turns black in the sense of "input out of range" maybe?

I had the same problem with my laptop, but the difference is it was old and I think Nvidia just stopped supporting the GPU/laptop/screen config (425m). The screen would go black when the driver loaded. The odd thing was plugging in my TV via HDMI and the laptop screen would suddenly start working, even after unplugging the HDMI lead, but then reboot and the same problem again. Just out of curiosity, have you tried unplugging and plugging in the monitor while the PC is in Windows?

What make 660ti do you have?

Edit: Full PC specs?

Something you could try.. http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-disable-automatic-driver-installation-in-windows-vista/

So Windows wont install any drivers after removing all traces of the Nvidia ones before a clean install.

was able to fix it, well, kinda.

Changed start up in msconfig to selective and un-ticking start up items. Guess something in my start up list is conflicting with the driver. oh well.

So, all running Smile

well, back to fucked up Sad

pretty sure its my screen (Acer x221w) dying on me lol. Like display driver tells it to use a refresh rate it cant handle anymore or something.

Its so fucked up, considering sometimes it works and then a reboot later it doesn't anymore ...

Any old and spare monitor that you might have in order to test if it's really your current monitor's fault? Or try plugging the card into a TV set to see if the problem persists there as well?

sadly no.

Whats really pissing me off, slowly, is, that it worked twice so far. Including running 3dmark complete with acceptable results.

This clearly tells me, the card is fine. (If it was the card, i'd rma it and be done with it hehe).

first time it worked, i changed boot options to selective mode and only loaded system stuff on start up , but next time i boot to OS, it doesn't work anymore and nothing i do in boot menu (msconfig) seems to have any influence anymore.

Quite frustrating.

Just saw this while browsing another forum http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1924167

Not sure if anything there will help.

i think what caused the issue in the first place, probably ... maybe ... was me not uninstalling the drivers first, before switching cards. So i most likely caused a weird driver conflict (of files) ... maybe.

Its all really weird Smile When nothing else goes, i am just going to do a clean windows install hehe.

switched the card to second pci-e slot and now it worked with 306.xx drivers (oldest i downloaded among the many i did download rofl). It again turned the screen off after windows logo, but then recovered a second later and now it seems fine. I am too afraid to reboot tho, so i am not really 100% sure haha.

That being said, i obviously passed a considerable time searching the net for a solution and it seems this is a quite widespread issue with nvidia and its latest drivers (3xx) and nvidia even acknowledges it, but can't seem to fix it.

add: well, several restarts later and its all fine, for now. It even stopped to turn off screen after logo completely.

The boring approach would be to completely reinstall windows after changing gpu which is what I do. Its kinda like killing a fly with a bazooka but considering the amount of time it takes to research a potential problem and all the frustration etc it might not be that bad an idea...

There is clean install option in Nvidia drivers, never had any problems with nvidia cards with the drivers. AMD drivers in the other hand, do not install completely new series of drivers over older ones, major problems incoming Laughing.

clean install only resets profiles to default.

But i think in my case, the problem was removing the old gpu without uninstalling drivers and then putting new gpu and install drivers over ghost remnants of the old card .. or something like that Smile

660Ti won't run a BF3 on Ultra in 64p maps with MSAA Wink

HD7950+VirtuMVP averages slightly over 60 FPS on Gulf of Oman with Ultra+4xMSAA (Motion Blur Off, hate that shit).

you would think yes, but you never know what impatience can do to a man Smile

@Stige, true, when a lot is going on, with ultra preset @1680/1050 my fps sometimes dip to 45. But they are more often at 60 synced.

Not really.

It also deletes current driver version in Windows' DriverStore. If you don't use Clean install and/or don't uninstall the drivers through device manager (and ticking delete drivers) you'll slowly see your driverstore grow by approximately 200MB by each new driver version that is installed on your system.

I found MSAA in BF3 extremely disappointing. Iit doesn't clean up most distracting aliased edges, on fences and the like. So I ended up turning it off and use SMAA instead. Can't notice the difference really in terms of visuals, it still looks bad either way.

fences, grass, trees and stuff like that use transparent textures, thus you need to use transparency antialiasing (which is very taxing) to get around that. or use fxaa at virtually no performance hit, game will look a little blurry but stuff that's using transparent textures won't appear so aliased.
