|
 |
So today had an important twist to my life, the local Embassy of Canada is looking for an IT professional, for SQL, Visual Studio, LAN Skills (weird) etc and ive always planned to go to canada so this is a BRIGHT start, and the income is double what i currently have!
But it hit me, its so good but im so confused and i even got scared. Im still in college and my skills are not geek like skills but i understand programming logic up and down and ive made web applications for the IRS here and used by millions of users daily so im pretty confident in what i know, i just lack experience with stuff like HTML coding, MVC, Javascript and SQL (i know a LOT of Oracle though), im pretty basic in those, but i can easily learn. Im doubting ill be up to the required skills, so to say, but im not sure. Also they want a Graduated person (im still studing) so dont know what that would do. But i fit a lot of the requirements.
Ever since i came out of high school, ive been working in the same government institution and i feel so complete there for my knowledge and my participation, 6 years there, so this change makes me feel fear, its a change, i would be quitting if accepted and moving to this new job with doubts on my skills and fear of change or maybe failing at this new job, and that would destroy my life.
I dont know what to expect, but i know that Canada is a dream to me, and the salary is DOUBLE what i have right now, hell its more than my current boss's income! If i get hired and i get a garanteed position and i get an open window to polish my skills and study ill gladly live up to the job, but im so confused.
I know ill be sending my resume tomorrow, i wanna grow, i wanna change my life, i love canada and this is a strong twist of fate, im going for it, i just hope that i dont get the job and then get sacked, it would be a devastating blow, i cant fall back as my family depends on me completely.
Ive never hoped, but for this one, i hope life finally pays what i am, i hope i can get it and get a good salary and a good support to develop myself.
Oh man, what to expecttt

You're constantly ranting about your country and that you want to leave it... the answer is right infront of you. Personally, I don't think you'll get the job anyway, because of the information you've provided... but ffs, just fucking do it... give it a try, dipshit!
It will be a rich experience, even if it/you fail/s. Never forget that most people are born in one place, stay in that place, getting educated in that place, work till they fall apart in that one place and will die in that very same place. You have a big opportunity there and you'll hate yourself later on if you didn't even give it try/chance.

Well, it looks like you already made your mind, but it won't hurt to say GO FOR IT.
You are young and this is certainly the best time to try and change things.
About the job application, if they realize that you are willing to dedicate yourself, to learn and to do your best, you'll probably be hired.
This really sounds like a very good opportunity, so good luck!
P.S. Even if you don't get the job, there are other ways (and probably even better ways) of getting out of your country... so don't give up on that either.

Ho, giving up will never be an option, even if i fail i learned that i feel insecure, so ill start working on big projects to see where im failing and ill restart my programming courses to get certified in various areas. This has just shown my that where im at, isnt the best, so i gotta rethink, i used to think that where i was i had the highest income and the best enviroment, but now i see that there are many better jobs. Time to upgrade and get out of my chair.

Oh and don't even dare to start ranting about Canada when it worked out for you and you realized that it's not the golden land of strawberry rivers, chocolate mountains and candy houses. It's shit everywhere on this ball. It's just different kinds of shit

You won't get the job but it's worth trying just in case.

yeah and, what's wrong with that? because you know, moving from place to place always trying to find where you fit in is so such a fulfilling life. |
Huh? I didn't say that's something wrong with it, did I?! Everyone should do what makes him happy imho. To me, life, is the pursuit of happiness. I just meant that it's an opportunity not everyone gets in his life even though they wish otherwise. So he should give it a try, if he's up to the task because it surely would be a good experience. No reason to get butthurt. I wasn't trying to belittle anyone, if that's the impression you've got.

On another note,
I really do not understand people who go to school, potentially go to uni. Graduate, land a first job, get a relative crap wage as a first job and once they have money they buy a house ASAP, get a killer interest rate because they have no upfront money, a 30yr mortgage and they are stuck. So, they are 20 something and stuck.
Just enjoy life, see something of the world. Go work abroad. Wait with kiddies, wait with house, wait with permanent job. You will have to work until you are 65-70, so enjoy your first years. Just do the job, and if it sucks? Well, come back. I am also looking for another job, interviews running for Switzerland, Amsterdam, San Francisco. If I get it, great, if it sux, i come back. At least I had a shot at some adventure

Neither do I.
Works quite well if you go to a state like Texas that only has property tax. If you rent a place the only taxes you end up paying are typical sales tax, and the federal income tax. If I owned the place I used to live in in Texas I would have ended up paying an additional $15k a year in taxes.

If you rent an apartment owned by someone else's then that owner pays the taxes, but he surely is including that tax in the renting costs for you, isn't he? Otherwise he'd be losing money. |
Property tax for a place rented is lower for the owner.
Further, most every state has property tax anyways. Just because the tax is higher in Texas doesn't mean that the rent prices are so much so higher that it is even an issue.

Well, in Belgium you pay ~10% of the property value in a transaction tax like thing. Registration tax it is called.
So imagine you have a 200k house. Assuming you have no upfront payment, you will need to borrow 220k. Imagine you want to move 2 years later, you sell the house and you made an incredible 20k loss, even if houses go up 1-2-3-4% a year, you will lose shitloads of money.
Most of the belgians relocate 1 time in their life...Compared to Netherlands where it is 4 or 5 times if I remember well... Most probably due to the high transaction cost incurred when buying proprty.

| MORPHINEUS wrote: | Wouldn't say crappy, just a modest house that needs a bit of work Tho modest... my girlfriend always said: Most Belgians have way too big houses and when you compare it to the size of houses here in Sweden then she definitely has a point
I also felt a different mentality (around town), people seem to be more at ease to downsize when the children left home, while in Belgium most elderly people are stubborn and cling onto their houses till the bitter end. To the point they really can't live alone let alone take care of the house.
(tho I base that on my experience in the Antwerp and East-Flanders region.) |
So true, exactly the reason why I will not buy a house in Belgium... Btw, appartments also go for 200k. Here in Ghent, I recently saw new-build studios. 42 square meters -> 215k. I mean, who is buying that? 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 living, 215k? Are you kidding me.
Loads of people I know are 21-22-23-ish and buy 3 bedroom houses. To house the future kids. Know a couple who is 22 and 23 or something in that order, no higher education and no permanent job yet and they bought a 400k house with a 30yr mortgage.... Very smart indeed. The guy was put on temporary unemployment because his ship was under maintenance and after 2 months he had to beg his mom to pay some part of the mortgage... Comfortable life... Lose 50% of your income and you cant afford your mortgage after 2 months.
Also nice job of the bank...

I never even thought of buying a house until I can buy it with upfront cash. I had that opportunity come many times, but Im comfortable with rent, so I constantly reinvest it in my company. Getting in debt while in mid twenties is such a fucking stupid thing, Spankie is completely right.
