the first game I can think of is Urban Assault.
It's quite old but it has direct3d support.
After they had shown a demo on different locations(E3 I think) Micro$oft bought it. Beside of that it's a good game.
Hehe, I looked for screenshots to Muzzle Velocity. Really, if you like THIS game you will LOVE Urban Assault!
