Sorry if dupe but very interesting and totally Out of order in my oppinion

Robbin bastards..not content with the hyped up prices they charge for new games, they want to screw people on the second user market. I'm wondering what, if any, effect this will have on the used games market in places such as Game, Gamestation, CEX etc.

Electronic Arts is the king of the sports game market with hot upcoming titles including NCAA Football 11, NHL 11, Madden NFL 11, NBA 11, FIFA 11, and EA Sports MMA. Now it has made a controversial decision concerning all of those titles -- it will lock players who buy used copies out of online multiplayer.

"Online services, features and bonus content" will all be covered by a one time code, that won't work for the new purchaser. EA describes, "You will be unable to play multiplayer online game modes or use your downloaded content in online game modes."

Used purchasers do gain access to a 7 day trial, but they will have to purchase a $10 pass if they want to continue to play online.

EA claims its all about offering its customers more, "This is an important inflection point in our business because it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhance premium online services to the entire robust EA SPORTS online community."

Ultimately, the slick move is likely designed to help it rake in bigger profits, though. Many purchasers will likely pay the $10 fee to renew their online access.

Retailer GameStop is partnering with EA to implement the plan. States GameStop Corp. Chief Executive Officer, Dan DeMatteo, "GameStop is excited to partner with such a forward-thinking publisher as Electronic Arts. This relationship allows us to capitalize on our investments to market and sell downloadable content online, as well as through our network of stores worldwide."

GameStop recent landed itself in a bit of trouble when it was caught selling used games which it claimed they were new. Hopefully it doesn't try that again, this time around.

Edit: Might be for PC only not tto sure

Only if you buy a used copy. If you buy a new copy you will get a key that is tied to your account and allows you to play online normally.

And fuck EA.

It's happening already to some extent, look at battlefield vip , in fifa look at live seasons . Now there just pushing it a bit further and spending 1200 msp's for something you can enjoy immensely( in my case what a hundred hours ) is well worth it.

So you can't leech all the features for free. just spend a fucking tenner if you like the online enough.... This isn't actually a problem if you bought the game though

Ohh you bought it 2nd hand , well that money you have to invest in all* the online features . theres a good chance the second hand price may have fallen to accomodate this

but you know what Chinese whispers are like; some newbie will read your comment and suddenly run and spread it all over the internet that the new 2010 Banwave disables all your XBLA games when you're banned.

I don't buy games second hand so I don't care, but as a principle yeah it sucks.

But at least, I can't blame EA for doing so, it's pretty much PC games all & over again : cdkey for online playing... And at least you can buy a key for 10 bucks, no need to buy a key at some random chinese site. Just because you could play the game for free online before on your pirated copy doesn't mean EA is that evil.

I actually think it's a good idea IMO : they earn money from pirates that wanna play online, and thus stop blaming piracy (and in this case, they earn money from people who wouldn't have bought their game in the first place) and it doesn't change anything for legit users.

Unless you are a cheap bastard, I think EA was smart about this !

Yeah I don't really see a problem with this. It is the same thing PC has had forever.

Its not encouraging it any way. If anything, it might prevent it.

Now, pirate copies won't be able to play online multiplayer (a key point to some EA Sports games) without a license so at least EA make some cash back (from pirates who buy licenses).

People who buy it new won't be effected.

I dont think its fair if people buy the game second hand. They are essentially selling the same feature twice.

Way I see it as a consumer is that a proportion of the cost of the game is to use the servers to play online. I buy the game and so I can use multiplayer. Now if I sell it I willno longer be using the online feature that was paid for. The next person buys it 2nd hand and should be just using the online access that was previously paid for. Anyway I know what I mean :O)

Morally its wrong but it makes perfect business sense

If you sell it second hand, I think you can sell the EA account too, I doubt it's tied to your console since it's a EA service, and not MS service...

I think that this is more about piracy than it is second hand games. Obviously the potential to make a little bit of extra money from people who have bought the game second hand won't be seen as a bad thing by EA, but I'd bet that this is all about discouraging piracy and/or making some money from the masses of people who steal their games outright.

Why the fuck did it take EA 15 years or so to figure out CD-Keys for Console gaming? It's been like that for ages in PC gaming, so why did they only start doing this now? You'd think they would have wanted to prevent pirates from playing online earlier...

Yep, EA is too greedy, something is up. I am betting micro transactions galore to make up for no online pass.

And also removing online pass is merely a mask to try and look like the good guys since EA has been labeled the worst company two years in a row.

Play BF4, oops you have to pay $5 to unlock TDM mode Laughing Oh yes, EA is THAT evil and will probably do it.
