anyone been there? how was it? can you recommend some places?

I just booked a 1 week trip with a friend together. We'll be flying on the 16th July and coming back on the 23rd.

I know, I know... I have turkish roots but I've never been there and I guess it's a nice city as long as you don't get lost, robbed, stabbed, raped & etc.

you know what's fucked up? I'll be turning 27 on the 2nd July (7) and we'll be in Istanbul together (2) for 7 days. 2+7 = 9 ~ turn it over -> 6 ! .... we'll be flying back on the 23rd...another great number.

A friend moved there six months ago for work, he says the city is great, except the people are a bit too traditional.

The only thing you have to be careful is your money. If you go to the Grand Bazaar, all the salesmen will try to sale you stuff - and they are very determined, and they are overpricing stuff cause you have a large "tourist" sign painted on you, and you have to haggle hard for every little thing.
But the city is great, and laden with history. My advice to you is to rent a car, the traffic is good and you'll be reaching places much faster.

I have not been there in over 15 years, so can't really recommend anything specific since I'm sure things have changed. I always liked that city. Good people. even the salesmen, that although are really dedicated to their job, are super friendly. Crazy drivers, major traffic in which everyone communicates excessively with the horns. You are in for a treat.

No, I'm not planning to rent a car there. I've seen the traffic in Ankara and Izmir, it's ridiculous how they drive. It would be suicide for me Very Happy.

our hotel is pretty close to all the sightseeing stuff. You can reach the "blue mosque" in 10 min. and the grand bazar is only 600m away.

they love their cats, they are literately everywhere and look quite different to domestic cats in the UK. Smaller with an ear clipped. Be wary of tea salesman and some lunatic offering you a jeep safari or cheap Turkish bath Smile

Istanbul is amazing, but the trip gets worse everyday. I shouldn't have gone on a vecation with a girl that I like just to find out today that she is already dating someone and hiding it from me...yay. well, only 3 days left until we fly back.
