After a glimpse look, I said meh another totat war in space kind of game. Turns out it's not. Combat is cinematic visualization ala Galactic Civilizations 2, but in ES you can control 'luck' factor by playing "Battle Actions" cards during three combat phases.
Quote:
The Battle View opens when one of your fleets confronts the enemy in a Star System. This View also
allows you to choose Battle Actions to increase your chances of winning the engagement.
1. The battle is subdivided into phases: A prologue, three combat phases and an epilogue phase.
2. The three combat phases are also shown in your Fleet Command interface.
3. During the long range phase, missiles are more effective.
4. During the medium range phase, beams are more effective.
5. During the melee phase, kinetic weapons are more effective.
6. You can select a Battle Action for each combat phase.
7. The battle can end in a victory, defeat, or it can be also a draw if both fleets survive, allowing them to resume the fight on the next turn.
Quote:
When you click on the Battle Action icon for each combat phase, the Battle Action choice panel
appears. Simply click on a card to select it.
1. The Battle Actions are presented as cards, bearing a color corresponding to their action family. The family is also displayed on top of the card.
2. Each card can counter another family of cards, resulting in an improved effect for the action. The countered family is displayed at the bottom of the card.
3. Some Battle Action cards are free to use, requiring 0 dust to activate. Those are technological actions, unlocked through scientific research.
4. Some action cards require Dust to activate, but their effect is quasi magical in nature, due to the uncanny ability of Heroes to manipulate Dust to create powerful effects. Those actions are unlocked by your Heroes as they gain levels, and they must be an admiral in the fleet for their actions to be available.
5. When you do not have enough Dust to activate an action, it is grayed out and the cost is displayed in red.
6. The Battle Action cards list the base and improved effects of the action. It is also possible, prior to the battle, to consult the battle actions your fleet will be able to play, in the Fleet Control panel.
The moment I discovered that it's not an RTS, I went and bought the game. Looks very polished for the alpha version and has very nice GUI that uses full screen and not just 25% like most 4x games

Looks very good. However, I'm still not sold on combat...it looks like it might work, but on the other hand, those types of games really benefit from turn based tactical combat like MOO had for enhanced depth.
Here the combat is sort of automatic with the player's only way to influence it is by choosing one ability ("card") to use during different phases of combat.
First of all, I would like to thank all of you for supporting us. The feedback we have received so far is great, and yes we have work to do!
There have been many comments and surprises on the quality of the version, which could hardly qualify as an Alpha. I guess we should have added more bugs in the game More seriously, this is an alpha from a production standpoint : it is not content complete. Multiplayer is missing, as well as 3 factions, and some production values (to introduce the universe) are under development. But quality is a critical part of Amplitude’s DNA. Just to reassure you: we did not start developing the multiplayer after the build was released last Wednesday It has been in development for many months now, but it was not ready for a release with the alpha.
So why did we release an alpha? Basically because we wanted to receive feedback and build our community. We have started to analyze your comments, suggestions and bug reports, to process and prioritize them. How far can we go in terms in implementing user suggestions? Well, I would say that the game must remain true to its creative vision, otherwise it will probably never release or become broken. That still leaves room for many improvements, and the game will have a new life once it is released : new content will be added afterwards.
Now you can play an alpha, but there are some annoying bugs in it (most of them already fixed), and you may wonder when you get a new build. Release a build is not that simple though:
• You must freeze the game development to avoid integrating changes that would cause regressions.
• By fixing bugs, we may have to modify the whole game. For instance, in some situations, the AI would get near-infinite money (rare reload bug). Once this is fixed, we need to re-tune the whole 8 factions (yes, even the 3 others you should not know yet) to make sure the AI behaves properly now that it has not the same advantage. This take a few days to perform properly.
• Once a build is created, our QA partner must spend at least 2 days of intense testing to make sure it has a satisfying level of quality.
Anyway, that being said, we will prepare a new version this week, and hope to release it next week.
So what is the team working on now? Well obviously we are adding what is missing to call this a beta version: multiplayer, remaining factions, narrative content. We are also tuning the game content, fixing many bugs (which hopefully you will never be aware of), and improving the game quality based on your reports and our own expertise. We hope we can have the beta version ready within a month, to make sure we gather feedback on the whole content before we release.
Alpha is VERY playable, sadly there is currently a bug with AI ships movement. On your turn AI ships with movement points remaining still able to move. This allows AI to skip blockades, making mid game+ quite difficult

It's quite unforgiving if you are not an agressive player, unless you want to play easy mode.
Just finished my firstgame, tiny universe, and took me 5 hours. Had 8 Dreadnoughts in the end when I got a territory win, very good game.
I'm paying a close attention to this game. Some of the things are kinda interesting. Now sure if I want to try the alpha yet so it doesn't ruin the experience =]

the alpha is very playable. I think if you're interested it is worth trying out right now.
it's not like the buggy, unfinished mess that sword of the stars 2 was on release. it's actually already pretty good. there are only minor issues as far as I know and no multiplayer yet.
