No, Bioware changed direction long before EA took over. Why do you think they were ok with it in the first place.
If you can't see the difference between BG2/NWN and Jade Empire/Mass Effect - you're delusional. DA:O was an anomaly because it was in development for 5+ years - and was started right after NWN. That's why it was still old-school to SOME degree.
Blame EA if you want, but it's all on the good doctors.
Yes, I can see the difference between BG2/NWN and Jade Empire/Mass Effect, the latter 2 were probably better GAMES. And i know that is blasphemous for a lot of people but BG2 isn't that much better then Jade or ME, depending on personal taste you can make arguments fore either of the 3 and as far as game play goes jade and ME were far better imo, the whole dnd system in crpg form has never stood well with me unless it was turnbased, BG2 did a good enough job at it, but I'd much rather play jade or ME in terms of gameplay. NWN had a great engine with the best implementation of the dnd rule set in crpg form and allowed for easy modability, encouraged it and that is what elevated it to greatness. The base campaigns of NWN were kind of bad outside of the last one, Hordes of the Underdark was quite good.
Its hard to just objectively compare the games since they follow completely different rule sets and settings, a lot of this shit is going to be subjecitve, and yes Jade and ME suffered in some aspects because of being developed for consoles and BG2 hasn't aged all that well, there's also a matter of which one you played first and other shit in between. For me Bioware's best game will always be SW Knights of the Old Republic and a lot of that is probably cause of various biases and what not. Its one of the few games I replayed obsessively and I wasn't a big SW fan or anything, wasn't even huge in to single player games back then as I mostly played diablo 2, CS and star craft back in those days, it was my first great RPG and it was the first single player game I replayed over and over.
Bioware may have changed direction over the years to some extent, but most of that was dropping the dnd rule set, their writing, world building and all that was still good, it only started to seriously decline post EA and a lot of that had to do with various staff members leaving.
I'm pretty sure most Bioware fans prefer BG2 to Jade Empire
In any case, I'm not talking about a decline - I'm talking about a huge change in direction.
Bioware wanted to expand and go into the mainstream. Personally, I consider KotOR and NWN the very best games they ever made - but that's all subjective.
I think Mass Effect was VERY inferior to KotOR when it comes to RPG elements and mechanics - and I happen to love DnD - especially 3rd Edition in NWN.
But that's neither here nor there.
The fact - and yes, I consider it a fact, is that Bioware went mainstream long before the EA take-over.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
BioWare General Manager Steps Down, Original Mass Effect Director Returning Hudson returns after working with Microsoft
Quote:
Aaryn Flynn, the general manager of Mass Effect and Dragon Age developer BioWare, has announced he is stepping down after 17 years with the company. Casey Hudson, the project director of the original Mass Effect, will be returning to lead the studio as the new GM.
EA has officially confirmed it's merged BioWare Montreal with Motive Studios.
“The teams in EA Worldwide Studios are packed with talent, and more than ever, we’re driving collaboration between studios on key projects," EA told IGN in a statement. "With multiple major projects in development in Montreal, we are merging BioWare Montreal with Motive Studios. This is an ongoing process, but there are many exciting roles and opportunities for everyone on the team."
The merge comes after reports that the Mass Effect series was to be put on hold after the underwhelming release of BioWare Montreal's Mass Effect: Andromeda, and that the studio would instead be focusing on BioWare's other titles.
“BioWare continues its work on new titles – including the highly-anticipated game, Anthem," EA's statement continued. "What’s coming next for BioWare is very exciting, and we’re thrilled to have Casey Hudson returning to lead the studios in Edmonton and Austin.”
EA Motive, headed by ex-Ubisoft exec Jade Raymond, is currently working on Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and other unannounced projects.
Lol, I wonder if stripping the Bioware label from the studio is finally sufficient enough evidence for the MEA true believers to acknowledge that the game really did tank.
well Motive is codeveloping the Visceral's Star Wars game and story mode of Battlefront 4/II so thry could help with that , but not sure if its good or bad thing
Whatever it is they are doing, or will be doing in the future, the moral of the story is that they are clearly no longer trusted by management to operate without strict adult supervision.

Also whether these true believers can recognise poor taste in games.

"We hear loud and clear the interest in BioWare doing more Dragon Age and Mass Effect," studio boss Casey Hudson wrote in BioWare's midsummer blog update, published last night. "So rest assured that we have some teams hidden away working on some secret stuff that I think you'll really like - we're just not ready to talk about any of it for a little while..."
Hmmm... wasn't andromerda developed by "some team"?

Last I heard they wanted to make DA4 a 'live game' - basically GaaS - probably with extra RMT...
Solo play? Nah don't be daft... who wants single player games in a single player franchise? ...
Now this is a typical example of abbreviations in these threads (games) that people are supposed to know since it's either too cumbersome to type a name or someone is just being lazy.
I can extrapolate DA4 to Dragons Age 4 (duh) but GaaS and RMT? Get an anaconda Soon? Return My Testicle?
