Take this with a pinch of salt but it was just announced on PS3Crunch, but! A new flashcart just got announced for the 3DS called the "Gateway"
Quote:
Gateway 3DS is the world's first 3DS flash card!
The GATEWAY 3DS TEAM proudly presents the first ever video proof that many thought impossible.
Supports all 3DS ROMs to date
Works on 3DS & 3DS XL consoles
*Below we show an unedited video of the device booting 3 different backed up 3DS ROMS *consecutively which are loaded on the GATEWAY 3DS device via microSD cards.
I'm unsure as to the function of those multiple SD cards. It's either;
A. One SD card per game as a design/protection/physical limit. It could also be a size issue since Luigi's Mansion's dumped ROM is over 800MB (ouch!)
B. One SD card per game since there's no homebrew menu selector system yet (understandable)
C. One SD card per game for ease of demonstration that game ROMs are working.
Either way, Gary seems to think this is real - and I trust cyclone's knowledge too, so this is great! £100 for a 3DS, £50++ for the cart (just like other on-launch flash carts) and weee!

I hope it's due to size and not encryption/protection, as that would be a huge shame. Having to have a separate SD card for each game? Blegh! Though if it's for size, then at least that won't matter; 32GB SD cards are what? £15? £17? That's upwards of 32 games on a single stick, well worth it!
Well if this is real, I guess I'm finally getting a 3DS
Edit: That Gary guy wrote: "And for those asking, it is 'early video' before the 'game manager' was finished in coding by the homebrew developers, reason for 3 microsd one for each rom."
I guess that means you can have all the roms on one microsd
Aha! So it was "B" after all? That's INCREDIBLY encouraging! £100 3DS (the 3DSXL is still £150) and what? £50 for the flashcart, perhaps? Poor Nintendo indeed Any news on an actual WiiU-mode hack, cyclone?
Only thing I know is that the Wii U ODE is real. Obviously the Wii U is hacked already, you don't pull out an ODE without having kernel access to a console.
But I guess every scene has their overlords these days
Hahaha are you kidding?I just now bought a 3DS because I couldn't help it and had to play a few games, and you are telling me the next week a flashcart gets released?
*How does this work?
It's a tiny bit more complicated than this, but I'm dumbing it down so that everyone can understand. Basically, this is a shell for an SD card slot which tricks the 3DS into thinking that the SD card is the game cart. By putting the ROM into the SD card, and the SD card into the shell, you've essentially created a 1:1 copy of a retail game; a bootleg.
*What does that mean for the user?
A couple things. The SD card has to be the correct size for the ROM. If you have a 2gb ROM you need a 2gb SD card, and so on. You cannot use a larger card than the ROM you're using, which also means that there's no way to store more than one ROM on the card at a time. Additionally, the save files are stored on the cart shell itself, as the spot for that is standardized. This means that if you change the ROM, the new game will see that information as a corrupted save and delete it. You'll need to back up your save files before switching ROMs, and you may need additional hardware to do so.
*Will this open any doors for better versions in the future?
Nope. Again, because it's running 1:1 copies, and can't run any modified or unsigned code, it won't be leading to better technology on its own.
Pretty much makes this whole thing fairly worthless, or indeed only for the truly desperate, if it's true. More pinches of salt needed
Take it with a LARGE amount of salt. Not only was that ^^ posted by someone that just signed up and has only posted that one post, but it's also second-hand un-sourced information anyhow, purporting to come from someone that "spoke with the team"
because 3ds really ... has no gamesthat would make you buy it
as of now 3ds line up are 9 games in retail that are good [i don't count crap]
Resident Evil: Revelations ===>>> ported to other consoles
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate ===>>> will be ported
Kid Icarus: Uprising
JAMES NOIR'S HOLLYWOOD CRIMES
and 3 games in they download service
The Starship Damrey
HarmoKnight
Pushmo
I want to play Theatrythm FF since the 3DS version is superior to the iOS one. I also want the new Fire Emblem, Etrian Odyssey, Monster Hunter 4, Dragon Quest, DKC Returns, Super Smash Bros, Ace Attorney 5, Legend of Zelda LttP Remake, Mario Golf, Bravely Default, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Yoshi's Island, Animal Crossing, Mario Party, Rune Factory 4 and Starship Damrey.
shit...
now i have to decide between wii u and 3ds, since both are pretty much hacked,
i guess i ll go with wii u since i already have 2 wiimotes, so if i buy 1 wiimote more i ll be set up for 4 person party gaming...i guess i ll go for wii u

There's a lot of top games on the 3ds. Enough to keep you playing for months until a new game comes out. That is if you're into that sort of thing.
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Brain Age: Concentration Training
Crimson Shroud
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Pushmo
Crashmo
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

I'd hold off on the wii u until you see games you want to play. I love the system and love every game I bought (even VC titles) Off TV play is awesome fun. But alas it doesn't have MANY games at the moment. It has A LOT . But most are ports, ports of old games, and a handful of exclusives. There's like 20 games out there on the market for the wii u. 7 are worth the $$$. But even then they are so diverse in gameplay / genre that you may not have something steady to play for a while.
@sabsab
Theatrythm FF. Really? I played the demo. Who likes these kind of games. Reminds me of Space Channel 5 ish type thing.

See, I can't stand Space Channel 5 -- but I LOVE Bust a Groove. Go figure I played Theatrythm on the iPad and it was fun (once you steal all the €100+ IAP) but I can't help but feel annoyed at the missing Movie Mode.
