|
 |
So I decided to extend my desk ( by not so very conventional means ) to make room for three monitors.
So, I have one monitor to the left of my Qnix QX2710 1440p screen and the other on the other side.
It looks like this:
IPS226 - QNIX QX2710 - IPS226
Each LG screen should be ran at 1080p while the Qnix retains 1440p.
Now here the problem starts, I can only have two monitors up at a time.
One LG screen is connected from HDMI into HDMI while the other has a DVI-D > Display port that connects into a minidisplay port adapter that came with the GPU. The QNIX is connected by DVI-D into the single DVI-D port into the GPU ( HD 7970 ).
What am I doing wrong?

I might be wrong here, but seems you need an active displayport adapter since none of your displays has a native displayport connection.

I think that's the case too. I guess this is mostly an AMD limitation since Nvidia cards tend to come with 2 DVI slots... which would be perfect for me.

Just get an active adapter.
One DVI port and one HDMI port share a clock, so only one of those 2 can be used at a time.
How many ports do you have? If you have multiple HDMI and/or DVI, try using "the other one". On my 6950 and 5870 I think it was the two that were above each other that were exclusive.
You sure the cable you got isn't an active one?

There's two mini displayports, one HDMI port and one DVI port. Using one of each. So the displayport cable cant be active.

What I had to do to get 3, 2 DVI and a display port adapter (active) to get all my screens up at once.
Im guessing you would need both display ports, and DVI. on most mine the HDMI was a 'secondary' of one of the other ones.

Wait, hold on. When you use HDMI + DVI, can you get the two monitors on that running?
If they haven't changed anything, then yeah, there will be 2 clocks on the card which will first be used for the HDMI and DVI ports, and then for DP. In this case you'll need an active adapter which will generate the DP equivalent of the clock signal. They're not that expensive, look for the Sapphire one; should be around 15 EUR or so.
As far as I know that's the same on Nvidia now. I don't actually have a third monitor to test, but I think there's only 3 timers on my 680 as well.
