I am planning on buying a laptop, for which it's primary use will be for mobile work (thesis). That being said, who buys a new toy that isn't fun? What has been everyone's experience when gaming on a laptop?

I was looking at the Toshiba Satellite A70. P4-2.8ghz, 512 mb ram, widescreen, and a 64 MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 IGP ($1700 CAN$ or approx $1250 US$).

I don't expect to be running Doom3 on this thing btw. Price is kind of a sticking point for me, so please don't suggest some alienware $3000 job ... that will only make me cry at what I can't afford.

Thanks to whoever wants to lend some input!

If mobile work is your prime use, you will have to carry a lot of weight with that desktop P4-2.8Ghz. And its better to have a quite notebook if you want to work on your thesis.
Why not buy a Pentium-M notebook?
I am using a HP nx7000 for work, and the fan almost never goes on, only for gaming. It also has a widescreen display (WXGA) wich is great for work but sucks for gaming. And the battery lasts for approx. 5h, 2h for the Toshiba is really short, but typical for P4 Notebooks.

I don't know if It's too much but the Acer Ferrari 3200 would likely handle most games. Only laptop today with an 64bit cpu. http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/fr3200.htm. It's also not that expensive.

heheh .. as much as I would like one of those, they retail for around $3000 Canadian. Shit. That's more than I pay for like 8 months of rent Smile But I'm sure it would run the hell out of some games.

I ended up going with a 3.06 ghz toshiba satellite. It's really nice looking, and plays games that are around 6 months old or so pretty well. At least I have a gigantic collection of games from the last couple of years that I will finally get the chance to play. It seems I actually play very little of what I download. Now... if they all had hacks for widescreen I'd be completely happy ...
