If you can squeeze it..i5 2500k or 3570k and an asrock board. (they are rather cheap).
What im running right now, a 2500k at 4ghz. and built a 3570k for a friend. they just cant be beat.
My work comp has a i7-2600k in it, and Mine is neck and neck for performance with it. nothing so far I throw at it even makes it break a sweat.
So far, the only reason to even go over a i5 2500k to the i7 version, is bragging rights to say you have an I7..real world they aren't any noticeable difference in performance.

yea I got the i5 and a the asRock p67 extreme4 gen3. and I got to say this is the best setup I've been happy with since waaay back in the day when AMD athlon was the king. well 4-5 years ago if you consider that 'waay back'.
Tossed it together, changed the multiplier in bios, installed OS.and been solid ever since. not one crash or such since I built it about a year ago.

ok. So 2500k or 3570k and asrock it is?
Those are a bit beyond my budget but I will see what I can do this month:P There is certainly no point getting something weak for cheap.
So surely no amd? I thought 2500k is old and overrated now

No, its still one of the best "bang for the buck" CPU's out there.
the 3570k isnt any different performance wise..its a few 100 mhz faster, and ivy bridge. so its a coke/pepsi thing on if you want to spend the extra 30 bucks for it over the 2500k.
But even at stock clocks, either meets or beats the $1000 Core i7-990X Extreme Edition when it comes to gaming.
EDIT:
From september review:
"Our tests demonstrate fairly little difference between a $225 LGA 1155 Core i5-2500K and a $1000 LGA 2011 Core i7-3960X, even when three-way graphics card configurations are involved. It turns out that memory bandwidth and PCIe throughput don't hold back the performance of existing Sandy Bridge-based machines."

i5-3570k might be a little bit faster, but it's a lot less heat efficient because intel jewed on the internal cooling.

It's all you need for gaming.
Going to buy myself a new CPU + mobo myself and an i5 3570k seems to be the best for the price of ~200€, also ASrock seems to be a good choice for a board. I'd like to buy another Gigabyte board, but the one I want cost 40€ more and "only" offers 3xPCIe which I don't need.

2500k or 3570k are basically the same price here. aout 800-900pln
that leaves me with NOT much for a mobo. Being asricj p67 extreme4 too expensive.
dang it. I was hoping to get all that stuff cheaper to squeeze case there too. Next month I guess

well you dont need the extreme asrock versions. many of their 50-60$ boards are very good also for the price.
I just happen to be doing my "every few years" upgrade at the time and had the money, so went with one of the higher boards.
All depends on what you plan on doing down the road, like needing 4 DIMM slots, extra PCI-E for another card..etc.

Get the cheapest you can find, you won't notice any difference. And about the mobos, I'd go for the ASRock.

i can confirm this. installed the i5 3570k and at stock clock, its a lot hotter than my old i5 Lynnfield, even overclocked at the same speed from the new one, got me cooler temps.
for example, Lynnfield 2,8GHz, OC to 3,66 Ghz, ran at 60° C - 68° C. on gaming, maximus temperature.
Ivy Bridge, at stock clock 3,6 Ghz, is running at 75° C maximus temperature by gaming.
i don't want to OC this by now, till my supercool icewater megacooling device is ready but its quite messy to make it ready.

Why overclock it? Enough power with default clock rates and you should wait at least till the warranty expires (if money is an issue) IMO.

Is there anything more powerfull than 3570k ?
I mean considering it's price. more than 4 cores would be nice and a bit futureproof

No reason to get an i7..by the time you need more than 4 cores, the 8 core you WOULD have gotten would be old, outdated, slow, and an old nm size. Like I said, in many reviews, the i5 2500k/3570k show no difference in performance than the $1000 i7.
I got the 2500k in my machine, and a i7 in my work machine. I can literally tell no difference myself either..be it games, benchmark, stress tests..even the "shake your e-peen' benchmarks that show how much better a CPU is underload..its not even enough difference in scores to mention.
If you are going over overclock..get the 2500k in my opinion. its a LOT cooler, and stable than the 3570k.
Ive had mine stable for weeks at 4.4ghz..but wasn't any real difference i noticed to have it that high so turned it back down to 4ghz.
So even trying to future proof, any current 8 core, would be 'crappy relic you need to upgrade' by the time you need a 8 cores to see any difference.
Was like me jumping on the q9550 bandwagon of "OH 4 cores, this will ROCK'. by the time 4 cores became the 'high end norm' mine was put to shame by the newer/faster/better/cooler 4 cores being made.
I cant give the q9550 away to my friends, even though it was 'top of the line' when it came out only a handful of years ago. Because they go "Sure its a quad core, like the average cores now..but its slow, cache sucks, bigger die size, and is blown away by even an average $200 CPU. now a days"

Ok right now it is:
2500k
asrock p67 pro3 br OR SI Z77A-G43 (G3)
Kingston 2x4gb hyperX grey 1600mhz
520W Antec High Current Gamer 520
I am still rather confused with motherboard and psu. Maybe Corsair 600W? IT's cheaper
