I remember bringing you home. You were so small and cuddly with your tiny paws and soft fur.
You bounced around the room with eyes flashing and ears flopping. Once in a while, you'd let out a little yelp, just to let me know this was your territory.
Making a mess of the house and chewing on everything in sight became a passion, and when I scolded you, you just put your head down and looked up at me with those innocent eyes, as if to say "I'm sorry, but I'll do it again as soon as you're not watching."
As you got older, you protected me by looking out the window and barking at everyone who passed.
When I had a tough day at work, you would be waiting with your tail wagging just to say, "Welcome home. I missed you." You never had a bad day, and I could always count on you to be there for me.
When I sat down to read the paper and watch TV, you would hop on my lap, looking for attention. You never asked for anything more than to have me pat your head so you could go to sleep with your head over my leg.
As you got older, you moved around more slowly. Then, one day, old age finally took its toll, and you couldn't stand on those wobbly legs anymore. I knelt down and patted you lying there, trying to make you young again.
You just looked at me as if to say you were old and tired and that after all these years of not asking for anything, you had to ask me for one last favor.
With tears in my eyes, I drove you one last time to the vet. One last time, you were lying next to me.
For some strange reason, you were able to stand up in the animal hospital; perhaps it was your sense of pride.
As the vet let you away, you stopped for an instant, turned your head and looked at me as if to say, "Thank you for taking care of me."
I thought, "No, thank you for taking care of me." |
This was from an article written back in 2001 and while not 100% reflective of my own scenario, the emotion is very much the same. My dog was awesome. I will miss her very much. This is part of the reason why I have not been as active on the forums lately. Once I get back into the swing of things, I'll get back to my old gifting ways .
Belle had cancer and was almost 13 years old.

I'm so sorry for you loss Mickey...
I felt the same when my cat died, it's terrible. I'd love to tell you a cure to rid yourself of the sads, but there isn't one..you will miss her..and it's normal to cry and feel grief.
The best idea to cope with this situation is going outside or focusing on something that will get your mind off. Eventually, you will be able to talk about how great she was without breaking down. You will never forget all the good moments spent together, that's for sure..stay strong mate.

So sorry for your loss, pets have too short of a life span and leave a big hole in our hearts.

Thanks, guys. You're right Ixi, there is no cure for the sads unfortunately. I'm doing my best to focus on other things (I need to get back into work mode since I've been a bit lacking lately due to all of this) and then, hopefully soon, I'll be able to just remember her for all of the good and happiness she brought me as well as to so many friends of ours.
Here's to anyone that has ever lost a loved one, no matter the species:

Sorry to hear, Mikey5449, very sad! I have a dog my own, and I fear we are nearing the moment which I fear the most...
You should take a new friend. If you are used to having such a friend always close by, the hole would be impossible to bear. Take a new puppy to fill it. Not a replacement, but a companion.

I simply couldn't agree with this any more if I tried. Our own hairy little redhead is, well he's old and his back isn't what it used to be, whenever he starts having a bad day - or, worse, a bad week - we start to fear the worst. I absolutely agree with Leo, you can never replace Belle and you shouldn't think that you are, but it can help the pain of loss immensely if you look for another companion when you're able <3
Best of luck to you Mikey!

Sorry to hear it mate, the best I can say is to endure. Our family also lost two dogs. First one was a German shepherd and had some kind of spinal degeneration in her old age, and had to go through surgery, lots of physical therapy, and her hind legs still never worked right after it and was forced to drag them if she tried to move about. Never managed to stand on them.
And the second one was inbred. He was the most beautiful neapolitan mastiff you'd ever see. Colossal, beautiful silvery grey fur and his face was not overly saggy, like most mastiffs, but relatively firm, I guess all the skin that goes onto the face of most mastiffs went to the rest of his body, you could grab a patch a skin and stretch it out quite far. He drooled all over the place, but that comes with the territory. Because his parents were from the same litter he developed epilepsy after about a year or so. He was given medication every day, and looked to be managing the illness for a while, but around year 2-3 he became worse and had to be put down because his seizures became too frequent nothing seemed to be helping.
