Formerly only available in North America on the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable systems, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim delivers a storyline rich with memorable characters and themes on top of engaging hack-and-slash action RPG gameplay that would go on to influence later Ys titles, setting the foundation that series favorites Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin were later built upon. Complete with the original high-resolution graphics and full USB controller support, the PC version of Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim introduces brand-new features exclusive to this PC version that aim to create a modernized gameplay experience more in line with later Ys entries. Among these features are full widescreen support, the ability to warp among checkpoints, and an optional “Catastrophe Mode” in which healing items can’t be purchased or stored and are instead used automatically on pickup.
Nice! It's about time, since it was originally a PC game back in 2003, but only the PS2 and PSP versions were released outside of Japan. Hopefully we'll get the PC versions of Ys VII and Ys: Memories of Celceta (which is basically a retcon of Ys IV) at some point, which for whatever reason have only been released in China so far.
Pity that we don't have any official western releases of V or the old versions of IV yet. Maybe someday. I'd love to have the complete collection on PC. Here's hoping that Ys VIII makes it, because it's looking awesome.
Correcting people since 2007 even if they're not wrong.
System requirements and screenshots plus some generic info on the game itself.
(If it wasn't requiring a modern OS you could run it on a PC with hardware from the late 90's)

Do I have to play the previous games to understand who is who and what the fuck is going on?
As Zeel said, though *personally* I'd recommend going in order of release. These are all remasters of older games.. but they are still older games, so the "earlier" ones will look worse and usually have less functionality or gameplay innovations, so if you go from playing Ark of Napishtim (which is Ys VI) to playing Oath in Felghana (which is a remake/reimagining of Ys III) then you might be a little underwhelmed. Whereas if you go from Oath to Ark, you get a smoother progression of the series.
