Hi guys,

i just got a laptop 4 free (Samsung R519) because the owner couldn't take the constant crashing anymore. After toying around with smaller games & epsxe,GPU temps on that thing are going trough the roof (68c +) while 60@idle seems to be common on that machine.

Weird thing is,i can't hear or feel anything fan related so it's either a good one or it doesn't move at all

Speedfan shows the temps but somehow doesn't let me control the fans,no idea if that doesn't work on portable devices at all.

Sooo,is cleaning the fan & applying new paste doable/adviseable here at all?
My options are trying it myself, bring that thing to a shop and let em do that for me (30 to 70€) or just don't bother since these things are unfixable and i will be fucking then.
Wat do,opinions please

Either the fan is actually stuck due to that its full of dust, or its just dead. Anyway, its easy to clean it or just replace it by yourself (ebay). Also changing the thermal paste will do wonders on old laptops (its basically burned out, laptops these days uses shitty thermal paste). If you go and bring it to shop, it will cost shitloads if they switch the fan and shit Very Happy

pay close attention to the "paste" if it's a thermal pad or not. Some laptops use them and you'll want to keep note of the thickness. If you buy a new replacement and buy one that's thinner, you're going to have a hell of a time trying to figure out what's going on.

R519 seems to use thermal paste. This is how the cooling looks...

The fan design is bad, so it will suck shitloads of dust on it (which usually leads to stuck fan and the motor will burn out).

I cleaned out my old Vaio and replaced the thermal paste, it made it run a lot quieter and cooler, definitely worth doing. Just take your time when taking the lappy apart.

Get a pdf manual, laptops are easier to disassemble than they look like, as long as you're careful with it Very Happy

Just watch out for the plastic connectors, treat those with extra care since due to all the heat throughout the years they can fall apart quite easily.

Everything is easy to dissamble, but assembling them back together is not usually Very Happy.

thank you guys for the input so far.i`m going to perform heart surgery on the patient soon,i just hope that the fan isn't kaputt since getting a replacement seems to be kinda expensive (only found "new" ones for 50 bucks and out of stock)

You call that hot?!

Laptops do run quite hot by themselfs, these are the temps that i have been getting since virtually day 1:

It's been cleaned a couple of times already, but had virtually no effect.
Same cooling stuff as you got in yours.

well,i wouldn`t mind the temp since i don`t keept it in contact with my legs.
Max Temp on the GPU was somewhere around 68c,right after hitting that anything crashes.Even emulating PS1 doesn`t work that well (stuttering after playing for 2 mins, temps trough the roof).

I know laptops aren`t that good with temps in general but it has to be possible to actually run something Neutral

hmmm the laptop of my wife runs close to 90°C if I remember correct and it crashes if you don't put some shit under it that prevents the hot air from building up.

And it is a bitch to disassemble. (I tried it 5 times and gave up each and every time Sad )

like one of those "coolpad" things with extra fans?i get mixed opinions about them, some say they`re da shit and others say they do not work as intended

We did not go for those coolpad things because that would be just one more piece of shit to solve the problem from outside Sad Maybe we'll settle for that "solution" once we tried everything else.
