Redshirt is the comedy sci-fi sim about social networking aboard a space station, starring the station's most ambitious low-ranking peon: you! Navigate the professional and interpersonal politics of the ubiquitous "Spacebook" to curry favor among friends and colleagues. As intense intergalactic conflict rages around you, it's up to you to accrue those all-important "likes" on your status updates! Whether you're looking for love, opportunities for promotion, or even a chance to play Zero-G golf with the captain, you can schmooze your way through social circles and claw your way up the career ladder. Perhaps you too can finally achieve the dream of an off-station transfer, or even the Redshirt's opportunity of a lifetime: being sent on an away-mission!
Soon after starting the game, you’ll receive a cryptic message warning of some event taking place in 180 days. The messenger doesn’t know what the big event will be, but it’s troubling enough that senior employees are being advised to plan their annual vacations for that date. Unfortunately, your lowly rank doesn’t qualify you for such generous job benefits. Alas, there is still hope! The space station personnel are obsessed with the social network SpaceBook. With some well-timed friend requests and event invites, you may be able to charm and schmooze your way to a higher status among your shipmates and avoid whatever fate is set to befall the more disposable crewmembers.

Redshirt is a turn-based life-sim game set aboard a space station called megalodon 9. The player has the role of a humble transporter accident cleanup technician at the start of the game, and must do whatever it takes, be that career climbing, schmoozing or black-market negotiating to find a way to get off the station in the next 180 days. Why 180 days? I'm afraid that information is classified, but we can show you a trailer that explains your new life aboard megalodon 9 here:

I added a new video so you can see how it plays It's basically a comedy simulator where you play a Redshirt (those expendable space officers that invariably died horribly on away-missions during Star Trek's original run ) who has to make friends and progress through their career using nothing but the starship's version of Facebook "Like" statuses of the crew, "add friends", etcetera, just basically play as you would Facebook in order to survive a coming, supposed, calamity.
Looks like a wicked spin on the typically-Japanese "life sim" games and I'm definitely looking forward to this
Sabina... are Your brother, mother, sister, uncle and friends developing this or what ;p

Naw, some lass in the UK is doing it but I dunno, something about this just sounds hilariously awesome and it really grabbed me from the videos and info so far - though I'm rather biased as I love these kinds of life sims (such as Princess Maker etcetera) but in full disclosure, I haven't even bought it myself (can't, no cash) so it's not like I'm promoting it, hehe.
I love the idea but its not something I'd buy. Oddly I'm very put off by the graphical style (note I didn't say GRAPHICS). I'd like to see better designed characters, it doesn't feel like much effort was put into the overall art assets which is a shame because it relies heavily on these being great given how much you see the characters in game.

i remember princess maker from snes, a few years ago i also played maiden breeder 2, a hentai ripoff of the game where you raise a little girl to be the best prostitute in the world, it still haunts me...
So you sit around and play around on facebook, but with fake people
I don't get it.
I could see it being fun if you actually enjoy spending time and updating, liking things, reading statuses and such on facebook/social sites. But isnt the point of enjoying doing that, is you actually know the people your doing it to?
Maybe its me, I don't think I've ever used the like button on facebook, facebook is my "ive ran out of other webpages to look at, might as well see what craps new on there". So maybe its just I'm not the target audience for this type of thing.

From what I've seen of the game, it's just a comedic take on how FB has become center of so many of the people's lives and how it future it might become an even bigger thing. It seems like fun. And isn't that why we play vidjagames?
PS: I personally, same as you, never "like" anything on FB, rarely post anything, and generally conciser it to be a terrible idea. That is why I run Adblock Plus filter "Fanboy's Annoyance List" that removes all social buttons from all websites.
Thought it was strange that this has been out for two weeks but hasn't been Yarr'd, so I looked it up on Usenet. Found a release via VACE and extracted fine. Then found a GOG version elsewhere. Just a FYI in case anyone is looking.

It's a fun game, or it was in the alpha, but it's VERY difficult to actually do anything since you have painfully limited actions each day. That and even though I'm used to games like this, I actually started to get fed up after a few hours of doing the same task over and over and over.
Yeah I played for an hour last night and was incredibly bored by the end. Similar to Facebook, people/aliens start whining if you don't give them a shoutout or do something with them. The mechanics seem busted too. You could have a great relationship going for a couple of days and then the other party breaks it off. About the only fun thing was backstabbing others and leapfrogging them to take a managerial position they want.
