|
 |
Developer: Firaxis Games
Publisher: 2K Games
Series: X-COM
Engine: Unreal Engine 3
Platform: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Release date: NA October 9, 2012 ; EU October 12, 2012 ; AUS October 12, 2012
Genre: Real-time strategy , Turn-based tactics , Role-playing
Mode: Single-player, Multiplayer
Plot:
Quote: | The game, set on modern-day Earth, deals with the international response to a global alien invasion. The player assumes the role of the commander of the top secret XCOM Project, the most elite military and scientific organization in the history of mankind, activated to engage in a seemingly hopeless war against an unknown extraterrestrial enemy with overwhelming technological superiority. |
Gameplay:
Quote: | XCOM: Enemy Unknown will feature the return of the classic strategy gameplay the series is best known for. Unlike Firaxis' Civilization Revolution, the content is not simplified for the console versions, compared to the PC version. The PC version will feature a different mouse-driven tactical UI and "the ability for modability".
The game's real-time strategy element is confined to the global view called the "Geoscape", where the player keeps track of the situation around the world and conducts resource and personnel management on a strategic layer, directing research of alien technology and production, interacting with the governments of funding nations, ordering their aircraft to intercept UFOs and dispatching their soldiers to engage aliens on the ground. A new view dubbed the "ant farm" interactively shows the XCOM headquarters. The player zooms in on different sections such as laboratories or workshops in order to assign and view the projects associated with these sections. The player can observe their soldiers relaxing, or exercising at the base's gym. A memorial wall to soldiers killed in action is also viewable.
Differing from the 1994 original, only one XCOM base is buildable in the game, the location of which is chosen at the beginning of the game. A passive bonus in resources is provided to the player, the nature of which differs depending on which continent the player locates their base. The player widens their ability to detect alien activity by launching satellites and positioning them over territories of interest.
All ground combat is turn-based, using an isometric 3D, third-person perspective featuring fog of war, line of sight, reaction fire and destructable environments. The player directly controls a squad of four to six human soldiers or robotic units in battle. Some gameplay features of the 1994 original have been removed or adapted. The time units system, the always-visible grid map and the inventory system of the original have been removed. Use of items and special weapons is now controlled through a toolbar of available actions on the HUD. The initial mission phase of disembarking from the transport has been removed. Missions now begin with troops deployed outside the craft.
XCOM introduces a variety of new mechanics. A more explicit cover system is now present, as is suppressive fire, active camouflage, a variety of different abilities for both the human and alien combatants and class specialization for the XCOM operatives. The missions now have various sub-objectives other than destroying aliens and rescuing civilians, and the game engine employs cutscenes and dynamic camera movements. The new elements of this system were described as similar to the ones featured in Valkyria Chronicles and Silent Storm.
The game also features a multiplayer mode for one-on-one tactical battles. Players spend a predefined points budget on assembling a squad of up to six humans, aliens or a mixture of both. Human units are customizable in terms of weaponry, armour and gadgets. A simplified version of the single-player perk system is also present. Alien units may not be customized but possess the abilities of corresponding aliens types in the single player mode of the game. |

Oh look, the only console gamers interested in this are all people who actually do have a PC and use it for gaming.
I'm sorry, but that's a little typical

Once again sorry, but holy fuck at a typical response. You're right Sabin, really the wrong fucking audience
Oh well, let's hope it makes them realise they should've made a sequel without any streamlining whatsoever!

There's a few previews out right now, places like RPS have done indepth looks at the game. To compare it to something you might recognise, though only superficially, would be a game such as Valkyria Chronicles and *maybe* Front Mission (no, not Evolved which doesn't exist anyway). You move your units around the battlefield, taking advantage of cover and planning tactically how to take out enemy units. You can recover alien tech, research and build new upgrades, etc.

Yup and I honestly didn't mean any insult or disrespect either. This game is clearly on the wrong platform being targeted towards the wrong audience, most console gamers will have only heard "XCOM" in relation to that abortion third-person shooter coming "soon" -- this isn't the game that the average console gamer would enjoy. Still.. it does still look like the PC version will shine, if RPS' comments are anything to go by, since by all accounts the demo was horrible

I just hope the game isn't considered a "failure" because it didn't sell a million copies on consoles.

I gave it a blast last night for a few hours. I started on normal as I mean to play it on classic on the PC. Not sure if I rushed in too quick but I didn't see an option to disable the retarded tutorial. Afterwards I could only choose to place my base in Europe or NA.
I think I am about 12 missions in so far and not lost a soldier yet, even on the difficult level maps.
Talking of maps....I have watched most of the preview videos and so far I every map I have plagued I have already seen. Also I have had one instance of my soldiers shooting an alien through a bridge that they had no chance of seeing him. Apparently firaxis were have meant to have fixed this problem.
I stupidly made 2 satellites ready to get more coverage but then realised I needed more uplinks plus engineers, and by the time I excavated and built more power plants I ran out of money. I had to turn off my Xbox at that point as it was 4 in the morning and I am stuck at work now
So far I am loving it

It was fun for a while, but i never have ANY luck in games based on percentages. When i keep getting 70% chance of hitting and keep missing then it's pissing me the fuck off, and aliens kill my squatmates from across the map.

Same here. Every time I remember Disciples 2 for example, the Hulk in me starts to surface. Miss. Miss. Miss. Peasant killed my Ice Giant.
BTW its the same with this game too. I have it preordered on PC, but I dont have the self control you do Sabin, and I tried it on my Xbox. Cant... put... it... down. Need to stop, but I cant. Now it would be a good time though, I messed up my game, researched the "story" items too quickly, now Im getting raped.

@sabin1981 : you should give it a try, if your bandwitch is free it won't hurt you (about RE6). Also it has FSAA 4X

How did you ruin it by researching them too quickly`?

Focusing the resources on research and focusing the research on "story" items resulted in my soldiers going against Chrysalids and Mutons with the basic gear. No laser, no armor, no nothing. A snowballs chance in hell.

I researched everything quickly myself. What i found strange was that i went from easy difficulty missions and straight to very hard missions. Was a pretty large difficulty change, and i think it came on way to early.

Seems to be hard if you play it wrong. Not that there should be a way of doing so anyway.
