Ok, so I figure RC2 is out (... i think) - when is it reasonable to assume the OEM version will... be made availible to the public?

There are rumors it will go RTM (final) the 28th this month. The problem with OEM releases is that manufacturers like Dell will stack up all kinds of crap on it. But there seems to be some kind of trade program for those who have 32bit XP. And when you think about it, It shouldn't be so problematic for the release groups to get a retail copy.

Yup. I'll never forget that.
BTW, the big problem is present if you are going the legal way. You'll either have to trade in an exisitng xp32 copy or buy a processor. So if you don't have xp32 and already bought 64bit hardware you're screwed.
I think the reason for this is to let the OEM manufacturers take care of the support. Without retail copies selling worldwide MS won't have to give support. Maybe they'll go retail when the product is more robust.

Windows XP64bit To Be Released Tomorrow
Neowin wrote: | Microsoft is expected to announce tomorrow that Windows XP Professional 64-bit and Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2003 have been released to manufacturing to be produced for general release next month WinBeta has learnt.
Build 1830 has been deemed worthy of release after 18 long months of beta testing of a product that many companies showed inital reluctance to install after Microsoft let slip that Service Pack 1 was already in the works at the release of Windows Server 2003 itself.
The service pack offers a compilation of updates as well as new security enhancements and originally was due in the first half of 2004.
The new Windows editions are designed to take advantage of 64-bit extensions to the standard x86 instruction set in processors from both Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and Intel Corp. 64-bit systems offer users greater computing power as systems can process more data per clock cycle and have greater access to memory. |

Let's see how well this goes...

Does anyone know how the trade in procedure will work?
Do I have to send in something physical or just download an update?

Not sure but someone posted bad.crack.will.expire.when.activation.grace.period.is.up about the "proper", not sure if that's confirmed. Seems like the best thing to do is wait a while before installing this one.

As there's no rush to move to the new version I guess people will wait for the corporate to come out before installing.
