Congratz ^^

You searched outside of your field or?

I've heard that sometimes having a PhD when looking for jobs outside academics, a PhD can be a burden, since they would have to pay you more, is that true?

Yeah, that is absolutely true. I did the PhD in biotech, but also have a degree in economics. I was looking for a job in economics or financial stuff related to healthcare/biotech/pharma for 6 months and getting really annoyed because I went on 1 interview and never heard back afterwards. So I recently just started interviews with stating my wage expectations, which is fair I think. I just asked for the same netto wage as the scholarship i got when doing the PhD, and it's a fairly good salary, but on the other hand it is not ridiculously high. But almost everybody said the salary was an issue. Half of the economic profiles I applied for offered less before taxes than what I was earning after taxes during my PhD. Which is, well, just insulting.

Now I signed at a small biotech startup where I can do both research stuff and economic stuff and I again asked for a wage relatively low, but they offered a nice wage given my profile, so I am really happy.

But indeed, people should be aware that doing a PhD, especially in Belgium is something to price you out of the market. Especially because at university you get a full bruto salary which is taxed partially at 50%... and you get no additional benefits, whereas in the private sector you get lower bruto salaries but additional untaxed benefits such as meal vouchers, pension plan stuff, expense allowances etc. and in the end you get the same net but at a lower cost for the employer.

Congratulations! It seems like the wait was worth it. Being able to do research and economics plus having a good pay seems like you had a lot of luck there.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

everyone starts low in finance... your salary exponentially increases over the years while you gather experience and knowledge. someone without experience is not able to correctly do the controlling, budgeting and financial management. you start doing the basics and climb your way up. stress and work pressure become so ridiculous the higher you climb, the less competition you have and that's when you start earning nice money. but say goobye to your personal life... especially in the global recession we are facing now.

if i just could reset my life to the age of 18 i would never study economics. NEVER Very Happy it looks interesting in the beginning of your career but it sucks in the end and money is no motivator to keep someone focused.

engineering, science, programming... well paid jobs with good work life balance. at least, that's what I think Laughing
