I worked on a website that had a giant (I mean giant, 600px high slider with top stories) and after a couple of months they wanted to add slots for banners ABOVE and UNDER IT ... That resulted in actual content being under 1000px wall of ads |
I wonder who comes up with these designs. Are there even the most basic functionality tests at all?

I dont get the comments. Google is tracking everybody to determine whether they are surfers or buyers. Just google 'red flowers' or 'buy flowers'. No adds vs. adds.
If you google southwest airlines, i guess you want the southwest airlines website... What should they show? The wiki page? Everybody gets on the correct page, and google gets money.

They're not banner ads. They're just large links to help people along with what they're looking for. People who are searching for Southwest want to go to the Southwest website. It makes sense to put a large picture that directs them there. If it was an ad for some other company, then you would have reason to be upset. But this is nothing.

It's not a banner ad, it's a search result...The guy searched for "Southwest Airlines". If you search for NFOHump you also get a large search result and I'm pretty sure we aren't paying google.

Its definitely a banner ad. And who knows extensive it will be. This is a single screenshot. Im not up in arms about it or anything but lets see what happens
8 out of 10 dentists prefer zipfero to competing brands(fraich3 and Mutantius)!

Oh I see the "Sponsored" bit now. But regardless, other than the "Sponsored" words, it feels exactly the same as the large search results you get for certain hits.

Yep, I read about this too, so not really something to be worried about. Yet anyway.
