http://www.kitguru.net/software/matthew-wilson/chrome-to-block-external-web-extensions/

Quote:

Google is boosting security for its Chrome web browser, starting in January you will no longer be able to install extensions from outside of the Chrome store meaning some useful tools will be lost, but it should also put an end to malicious software.
Google has deemed this necessary due to the amount of complaints received and problems caused by malicious software installations. Chrome Engineering Director, Erik Kay said:

“Extensions are a great way to enhance the browsing experience; whether users want to quickly post to social networks or to stay up to date with their favorite sports teams.
His statement continues: “However, bad actors have abused this mechanism, bypassing the prompt to silently install malicious extensions that override browser settings and alter the user experience in undesired ways, such as replacing the New Tab Page without approval. In fact, this is a leading cause of complaints from our Windows users.”

Seriously. Is there no end to the amount of shit Google are turning into? They really are turning into a terrible and hugely anti-consumer shitbag of a company Sad

Quote:

While this move will reduce the amount of malicious software users can be affected by, it will also block some useful tools such as Media Hint which can be used instead of a VPN to access region restricted content. Software makers who have legitimate extensions for Chrome should get them on to the browser’s store soon.

I wonder how much money fell into Google's bank accounts after THAT removal? Rolling Eyes

I just ditched Pale Moon this morning, been having too many problems with lag and general browser shittiness lately - the last straw was something that started happening over the last two days, being utterly unable to use Facebook as it would freeze the browser and cause everything to load terribly.

I have already ditched my Gmail accounts. I am with one foot out of using google.com for searching (results have been steadily becoming less and less accurate as Google removes precision for sponsored results and reduciing server load). I am considering dropping Chrome as well. Not because of this. It will be possible to tick "developer mode" and again enable installation of external extensions. Just because of Google.

At any rate, I would never go back to Gecko/Firefox. Abominations.

Whatttttt? Surely if a company PAYS to have their products and results shown on Google, then obviously the products must be good? No? Why else would they pay? It's perfectly understandable and I think Google knows best what we like.

Still using Firefox and being content about it. Chrome's just not worth it, not before and especially not now.

Wow so many butt hurt people over something that's pretty darn logical with very little effect. Rolling Eyes

The only thing this will do, is force extensions to join the app store where it can be removed if it proves to be malicious. If the devs don't want to join the Chrome extension store, then that's their fault, not Google's.
