Hi guys, I want to upgrade from my windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit. What is the best way? Use upgrade install or a clean install? The only problem is I have over 30 games installed on 2 HHD's . Plus a shite load of programs installed. Any helpful step by step links. Thank you.

i dont think upgrading x86 to x64 would be that smooth, something will definitely get fucked along the way, so clean install is probably best

You can't use an upgrade install to go from x86 to x64, I'm afraid, clean install is your only option.

Damn...so do you guys know of any really good tutorials that would help smooth this process. Fuck knows I will forget something and spend too long reinstalling and redownloading programs to be up and running again. Thanks again!!

The best solution: Don't! Don't install anything right away! Do it lazily, installing as you need something. This is the best solution. People don't believe how much shit they have installed without needing. Prepare the drivers you need (64-bit versions) in a folder, and install them right away. Then as you need something, download and install. Make a backup of your picture and document folders.

+1

And I always make a backup of my AppData folder aswell, for savegames and such.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

If those games are installed via steam you can backup the steamapps directory and just drop it into the new one after the install is done. That will require some kind of separate drive though as its likely to be huge.

Another question as I change over to 64 bit. I have 2 internal HDD's. One has the programs and apps plus the OS on it. The 2nd drive has all games on it. When I reinstall the OS to 64 bit will I be able to play the games off the 2nd HDD? I know I will have to take the game .exe's and make shortcuts to my desktop again....will the games work or will they have to be reinstalled? Thank you

Well that really depends on how they were installed.... If they are steam or origin games you should be able to just copy/paste them into the new steam/origin directories without having to re-download everything again. Good luck!

As a tip, unplug all - not needed - HDDs while installing Windows. This will prevent you from 1) formating the wrong HDD and 2) from screwing up the Win installation.
I once had the case that Windows decided to create the boot sector on a different hdd than the one I wanted to install Windows on. It has something to do with priority of the disks, but easiest is just to unplug all other disks.
In your case, plug in the game hdd after you set up your drivers and updates and have a look which games need a reinstall. Most games should work fine, especially if you are running them through steam.
