Hello,

Again, I come looking for the infinite wisdom of the humps. So, my significant other has my old PC, which is a Q8400 with 8 gigs of ram and some shitty g41 mobo. Now, I want to buy her an i5 and I found an offer from a friend, brand new stuff, a Haswell i5 and a Gigabyte GA-H87-HD3. All of this for 220 euros, which is on the cheap side because I'm basically spending with about 50 euros less than getting them from a store. Now, for the bad part, the CPU is an i5 4570S, the low TDP version, which, as I understand, is made for office stuff. She does not use her PC for office stuff, but rather gaming and photo processing (Lightroom, Photoshop).

Now, for my question, is it worth getting the 4570S? I can't find any reliable reviews online, newegg, etc since most of them praise the low power consumption and nothing else.

Help me, NFO, you are my only hope.

Th S will perform just aswell as the non S IIRC with lower TDP.

If you want an ugrade to that one, you'll have to get the K version, but you'll also need to get a Z mobo that supports changing the multiplikator on the K.

I think for 220 its a good enough upgrade to the Q8400.

I don't intend on overclocking it.

As long as you trust your friend to sell you a working piece of equipment. Goes without saying you'll get no warrantees.

He actually has warranty certificates for both of'em. I'm just doubting the i5 would work as well as a non-low power CPU.

You won't notice a difference, go for it if you don't plan on doing any overclocking!

EDIT: This is the first time I see someone being sensible? People seem to buy Z87 etc overclocking overpriced mobos and then CPUs that can't be overclocked??

But your friend obviously has mad the right choice there with the H87 Smile

I meant good enough for the price he's paying. Of course its a massice upgrade from the Q8xx.

Obviously you can get more if you plan on OCing for just a bit more money.

No OC-ing, stock values everywhere, she's more comfortable like that. I'm guessing she's going to like it. And she needs it too, her photographic project took off and she needs a better PC for processing, the Q8400 simply doesn't do her any good within her required timeframes.

Yeah, I thought as well, I merely had doubts about the CPU, which as it seems were uncalled for.

I'm surprised he's giving me warranty certificates as well, apparently he bought them for himself but stumbled upon some more money and wants to upgrade to an i7. Can't say no to his offer, those 50 euros can feed me for about a week, and it's a good investment as she can make stuff faster which also means more money.

Thanks guys, I knew I could count on the humps for help.

Then I don't see a reason against the transaction. I bet it will be more than suitable for the needs of your girl.
