Space Rangers HD: A War Apart remasters and expands the world of the cult classic Space Rangers 2. The game is developed by the SNK-Games team in close cooperation with fans of the series.

The biggest of the improved features is a new scenario dedicated to the pirates threatening the galaxy. While the Coalition spends all of its resources to fight the Dominators (sentient machines who seek to eradicate all life), the pirates have united under the banner of a mysterious leader. Under this new master they have begun their own guerilla war to seize power in the weakened Galaxy. Players can now choose with whom to deal, the Dominators or the pirates, or both at the same time. If you choose the latter path, you will receive new story and side quests, new goals and promotions. After winning one of the wars, you can either finish the game or continue playing to win another.

Players begin their pirate career as the lowest of the low, and will make their way to the top of the pirate hierarchy, completing story missions and learning new information about the organization and its unknown leaderwhose actions threaten the very existence of the Coalition of sentient species. All player actions affect what kind of place the Galaxy will be at the end, with the victorious Coalition that managed to overcome its enemies or with a collapsed alliance from both external Dominator and internal pirate pressures.

The game has received a major technical overhaul in addition to the addition of new content. All of the main menu, loading screens, planet and space station vistas were reworked. Now you can choose a display resolution of up to 1920×1200 and planetary battles employ modern render technologies.

The original and the sequel are still perfectly playable, what does HD add that would make me want it?
Also they say it's an HD remake, yet the screenshots which are supposed to draw me in are the same resolution as the original game 800x600.

The one you're thinking of is Final Fantasy Adventure (aka: Mystic Quest Legend) but it's not the same as the SNES version, which is often called Final Fantasy USA and was built as a basic introduction to the series. I absolutely love the GB versions, but SNES MQ will always have a place in my heart <3

Additional Pirate campaign as well as updated visuals, from what I can tell. I'm down for a copy as soon as it comes out... price willing.

Yes, but there was never a story/scenario for being a pirate - it was just "you can be a pirate" - this one claims to have specific plots for that, as well as improved visuals (I, for one, would be grateful to be able to play the game higher than 1024x768 Razz)

FAQ
(frequently asked questions)

Q: Are you so out of fresh ideas that you’re going to sell the same game third time already? Isn’t there already a free expansion pack with HD-patch?
A: We’ve always wanted to work on SR franchise, and when 1C Publishing gave us the green light, we happily agreed. And no, “A War Apart” isn’t the same “Revolution” made by some of SNK-Games’ employees back in 2009.

Q: Are Elemental Games or Katauri Interactive, original developers of SR series, somehow involved?
A: No, they are not, though they’ve supported idea of the project.

Q: How about full-scale sequel? How about Space Rangers 3?
A: That’s something you should ask owner of the Space Rangers franchise – 1C Publishing company.

Q: Will game be published for MacOS, iOS or Google Android?
A: Our top priority is PC release. We do not plan to port the game to any other platform at the moment.

Q: When game will be released and for what price?
A: Retail prices are TBA. Estimated release date is 2012 Q4.

Q: What’s new besides graphics and technical improvements?
A: New sideline story about space pirates, which will allow the gamer to either play as real bad guy or to feel true “undercover agent” way of game.

Q: Are you’re in posession of game’s source code, or you’re doing everything on scripts and duct tape like you already did back in ’09?
A: Yes, we have everything we need.

Q: Are features from free “Revolution” gonna be used?
A: As an examples or idead at best. We prefer to do everything from scratch this time.

Q: Are there will be new quests, ship hulls, weapons and equipment?
A: Yes, of course.

Q: We’d really like to see cooperative play or network mode this time!
A: Because of very special way of SR gameplay, this is impossible to implement inside of the SR2 box. Next time – maybe.

Q: And no online game either?
A: Sorry.

Q: Can we at least suggest few ideas for gameplay?
A: Of couse you can, but please note that we’re limited in matters of money and time, thus we will be unable to make everything you will request.

I love this Faq. At least they are being honest. I can imagine the level of accusations they must had since the announcement. Smile

I really liked Space Rangers 2. But it is ridiculous how much they are milking this old game.

Space Rangers 2: Dominators (original)
Space Rangers 2: Reboot (original with expansion)
Space rangers 2: Revolution (Russian only expansion)

Several years between each of these releases. And actual additional content of later releases is on the level of today DLC standards.

And original was released in 2004/2005 !!!

1) release good game.
2) wait a few years
3) repack same game, add some stuff, re-release the game for full price
4) go to 2

P.S.
Personally, I'm sucker for this kind of game, so I will play it. But would really more like proper sequel, rather then HD repack of milked original.

I was gutted about that Revolution expansion being Russian-only, I'd have loved to play that properly. The devs have no intention of translating it either, simply stating that they made the expansion for fun, but it's not fun to translate so they're not doing it.

Sigh.

Oh well.. at least A War Apart is coming this year. The sooner the better, if you ask me!

Laughing Yep
Every feature is copied, besides the bulky body/space suit. The helmet is almost the same, the head resembles Mordin's, and those hands.. are just perfect Laughing.

PSF: Space Rangers 2 is a game that shouldn’t really have worked, yet it did – brilliantly. What was it about the game that made it so successful with players, do you think?

Sergey Gerasev: The major features of the game are a very balanced yet complicated world and the humor (in Russian version at least). Also the game has a great level of replayability – five different playable races, five specializations plus a newly generated universe each time player starts a game.

PSF: How successful has the game been for 1C?

Sergey Gerasev: The game was very popular with fans of sci-fi all over the world. Original Space Rangers 2 was most profitable Russian-made game for 1C in 2004.

PSF: Why did you decide to fund an HD version of Space Rangers 2 and not a full sequel?

Sergey Gerasev: The guys who made the original game were fully occupied with production of Kings Bounty series, then with their first MMORPG Royal Quest. But Space Rangers’ Universe is very fragile. So we decided to take a group of fans (few of them were a part of the team and worked on the previous game) and make the game playable on modern hardware. This is also kind of a test for the new team since they are also adding quite a lot of new content to the game, a new scenario – Pirates’ Onslaught.

PSF: Can you envisage the HD version leading to a possible Space Rangers 3? What would it take for you guys to consider funding a new game in the series?

Sergey Gerasev: If there’s a team that can create SR3, we will approve the funding gladly. We had it in mind when we approved the decision to make the current game.

PSF: Sounds promising. What sort of new content can we expect in A War Apart? More of the same?

Sergey Gerasev: As I have mentioned above A War Apart is a new side scenario. In addition to war with the Dominators one of the pirate clans starts its war against the Coalition. Players can now choose from additional options: become a bloody pirate without honor or try to work as an agent under cover. As for the main scenario we have new text quests, planetary battles, ships, devices, etc. Battles in the hyperspace (arcade battles) now have a special button in the main menu for gamers who want to play them apart outside the main game.

PSF: Why did you decide to expand piracy in the game? Was it something you felt was lacking from previous releases?

Sergey Gerasev: The entire history of mankind clearly states that in wartimes bad guys become a powerful force. It was easy to imagine their urge to bring anarchy to the world.

PSF: Fans seem keen to have as many new text quests as possible. Will you be providing them?

Sergey Gerasev: Apart from the newly made text quests we also have some quests, which were never translated for the original game. We will try to include them as well.

PSF: Poor translation and the RTS battles were both aspects that players recall as low points from SR2 and Reboot. How are you working to improve these aspects?

Sergey Gerasev: We are working with an American writer now. I hope the texts will be much more appropriate with his help. RTS battles are only optional. You can refuse to play them any time you are offered one.
