I read a lot of books, most of those are ebooks, I was considering getting an e-reader. I currently use my phone (Samsung S3) for reading, it works fine. I was wondering whether someone who made the transition from an LCD screen (aka phone) to an e-ink screen (aka e-reader) would care to make some comments about the added value. I assume it's much better for the eyes and at full charge it goes days and days.
Second question, is it even worth the trouble to go e-reader hunting with a maximum of 100 euros in mind?

Why just not get kindle? The basic ones are pretty cheap, about $70 in US. And battery lasts very long, about a month.

Although, I tried reading reading school book on a S2 but never again. It just doesn't compare to kindle at all.

It is. Look into Kobo. I've seen a few of their e-readers in action now and they are pretty damn good. Besides them there's obviously Amazon and Sony as well.

You should look *around* the €100 mark, I think the Kindle Paperwhite is something like 109?

Do any of the e-readers have some kind of built-in DRM? Not that I'd ever pirate anything of course.

Kindle Paperwhite can't do epub Confused Aaaaand I can't seem to find it in NL.

Kobo Glo seems to be very well reviewed.

Amazon is who make it, dont know if you can buy it in a retail store here in Spain, dont think so. I ordered in amazon.es and next day it was at home without problems and the warranty works pretty good and friend of mine have a problem with his and next day he has a new one at home and the guy from ups take the broken one without any charge.

After reading some reviews and getting stuck between Kobo Glo and Kindle Paperwhite, the Paperwhite seems to be the better choice based on HW and SW (I might buy some books one day). It's nowhere to be seen here though Sad They expect it'll hit NL late November.

edit: I might stretch my budget and go for a Kobo Aura HD. So many choices.

I think I'll be going for the Aura HD. It seems to have a glorious big, high res screen. With 146 euros it's above my limit, but considering that I'll be using it for years and years, it doesn't seem that much.
Should I be aware of any upcoming e-readers?

I've bought the Kobo Aura HD, what a briliant piece of tech. I had my doubts about the uses of a separate e-reader compared to a tablet, I don't have a single doubt now. The screen is just briljant, the e-ink screen looks like paper, so futuristic. The light is great and the device is very responsive and fast (pageturns are almost instantaneous). I have a big physical library, but I think I prefer an e-reader now. When you put it on standby while reading a book, the book cover is used. When that happens, the screen looks like it's paper behind a plastic cover Very Happy
The device also has two features I really like. One is a browser, which is rudimentary but works very good. It's all black/white obviously, but everything looks sharp and correct. The second function is something called "Pocket". You make an account, you install an app on your Phone/PC/whatever, you open an article on your phone (an analysis on BBC news for example), you save it to pocket with one click, sync your e-reader, and BAM, you can read the article offline anytime you want, properly formatted! Freakin brillant.

I was a doubter (that's why I apparently tortured myself reading on my phone), but I have seen the light. If you read books, an e-reader should be your next big buy IMO.

Likely find a decent condition used Kindle for almost nothing these days.

And yes, E-Ink or go home for e-readers.

Preferably even cheaper than 100€, 50-70€ would be ideal for me.

Kindle Keyboard or Kindle Paperwhite. If you go preowned, and let's face it; it's an ebook reader - preowned is perfectly fine, you can get it for as little as £35 for the classic Keyboard or £50 for the Paperwhite. There are also cheaper brands, such as the Nook, but they're simply not as good as the Kindle Paperwhite. Kindle Fire HD is cheap as well but that's an Android tablet with a standard screen, pointless (IMOIMOIMOIMOIMO) if you're looking for an ebook reader. You really do want eInk for these.

You definitely want something with e-ink.

I bought http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2015-Hot-Sale-Sale-6-Pdf-Livros-Ereader-Brand-Kobo-Touch-N905-2g-Ebook-Reader-6/32274695225.html ( Yes, AliExpress ) and don't regret it for a moment, really great piece of technology. It's like reading from the real thing.

Thanks for the tips guys.

My big question is: how is the yarring on those things?
Can I just slap a random pdf/epub/etc in there and read it? I'm guessing amazon has some sort of lockdown on that, no?

I use Calibre to convert pirated formats (like epub or doc) to one amazon support (azw3 or mobi). You can even send it directly to kindle via USB or via internet (kindle email service). Amazon themselves have their own converting service, you just send it on your kindle email and they'll convert it. But it doesn't support .epub so it's pretty useless and also does worse job than calibre. For example calibre will replicate chapters from .doc (from the titles/subtitles), amazon service does not.

http://calibre-ebook.com/

What's worse is finding a good source for ebooks. It's pretty tough sometimes to find ebooks in both my native language (czech) or english.

Sweet!
Now I'll read some reviews and make up my mind on what to buy, and on how much to spend.

I have the Kobo Aura HD, I still love it and use it almost daily before I go to sleep, backlight FTW. You should be able to buy one used for cheap.

You can use any format ebook (generally mobi or epub) and use calibre to sort and tag them. As for a source for ebooks, you can basically type "book X epub" in google and get a dozen sources. Most torrent sites also have ebooks. I don't need to look for long.

If you like to read big PDFs, think 50MB Scientific American for example, Kobo Aura HD is useless since the CPU is clearly too slow. It works, but it isn't exactly a smooth ride. Normal PDFs work. That would be the only con I can think of.
