I am sucker for games that are based on some sort of progression and evolution.
Games like civilization , paradox grand strategy games and many more.
I played so many of for so many times, sadly those games are rare and new ones released seems to be empty shell.
Civ 5 complete edition still have less content than civ 4, ( civ 4 with mods have probably 100x time the content ).
Just released banished doesn't have depth either, its fun and great, but i dont see myself playing it for weeks.
I am after less known gems, or maybe some incredible mods for more known games, so shoot away if you have any suggestion for sim/rts games

Anno series? Or Master of Mana & Caveman 2 Cosmos for Civ 4.

played anno loads, caveman 2 cosmos is so slow now that its pain to play, i suppose adding adding and adding stuff into it will do that, might look into master of mana

Nothing is going to compare to Civ 4 with mods, but here are some games I have got over 40 hours out of:
TBS:
Civ 4 - Masters of Mana [second vote] - last of the "Fall from Heaven" mod-mods to be updated. Combine all the FFH mods together and I have more than likely spent over 200 hours playing them in the last 9 years.
Dominions 4 - improves on Dominions 3, many mods, good depth, graphics.... not so much. I love messing with the mod nations, and have spent far to much time on this game already.
Age of Wonders (any)
Eador - Genesis
RTS:
Paradox and Creative Assembly games are the only 2 "grand scale" RTSs that I can recall playing. Everything else is like Starcraft, Dawn of War, Spellforce, ect.

Evil Genius
Dwarf Fortress with graphics mod
