Romanzo Criminale – La serie - is a television series Italian based on the eponymous novel by judge Giancarlo De Cataldo, and it is the second adaptation of the film Romanzo Criminale (2005) directed by Michele Placido. The first series quickly achieved cult status in Italy.
The series is set in about 1977-89 and follows a criminal gang in Rome that has a near monopoly of the city's heroin trade. The gang is led by three old friends, Libanese (Francesco Montanari), Freddo (Vinicio Marchioni) and Dandi (Alessandro Roja).
As well as its internal feuding, the gang has to deal with the Camorra and Sicilian Mafia that both supply its heroin, the police led by Commissioner Scialoja (Marco Bocci) and the Italian secret services. The plotline is partially based on real events concerning the Banda della Magliana of the 1970s-90s.
After having finished watching Gomorra I started searching for similar tv shows and I discovered this tv series. It is praised more than Gomorra, so I'm cautiously optimistic about it. It's not a new one (2008-2010) but it makes no difference to me.
There are different releases here and there, most lack English subtitles, however, if you manage to find Romanzo Criminale s01-s02 720p WEB-DL DD5.1. H.264-EsQ (it's on usenet, both seasons) you won't have to bother with subtitles coz they are hardcoded.
As an italian I've seen it, after some initial indecision since I'm not really a fan of italian tv stuff in general, and it's really nice.
If u've already seen some Gomorra u'll promptly notice some similarities in the way story is told, music mix, use of cameras etc. (authors are the same in both, i guess), but as a "roman" i prefer this
Differences are probably on the characters side: there's more empathy raisin for them, more Walter White 'effect', i'd say
I wish they showed what happened to Patrizia and I didn't quite understand why
Spoiler:
Donatella killed Fredo...Yeah she worked for the secret service and they wanted Dandi dead and Freddo didn't kill him..so what? And what about that list Dandi had that was supposed to keep him alive and get published or something in case he was killed?
Did she kill him so that he wouldn't tell anything related to the secret service to Scialoja?
Actually the whole "secret service" plot was kinda messy.
Just finished episode 10 from S1 and I have to say that it's really high quality. I still like Gomorra better, maybe cause I tend to favor darker tones, but this one could be easily seen as being on par.
