What is Legend of Grimrock?
Antti from Almost Human Ltd. wrote: | Legend of Grimrock is a fantasy game loaded with underground adventuring, tricky puzzles, combat and role-playing elements. In other words, it’s a dungeon crawl game.
It’s a genre that a lot of people consider old fashioned since nowadays there are huge open world RPGs filled to the brim with stuff like customizable horses, several-hundred-page scripts for subplots alone and, uh, talking dragons or spaceships I think. But we feel that some of the simple charms of dungeon crawl games have been forgotten and for no good reason too. To many, it might feel silly to make a 3D game in this day and age that constrains itself to grid based movement and environments but it actually works rather nicely when you think of combat as a game of tactics and timing. It works very well when designing puzzles too, which is an element we feel is very lacking, and in some cases completely absent, in modern RPGs. And, possibly most importantly, it also makes it possible for a small team of four developers to make a rather sizeable game!
Obviously it won’t have the same mainstream appeal as many big budget RPGs, but when you don’t have too much money you can afford to make niche games. And I’m not even joking! It’s pretty darn expensive to compete with the industry giants in their own game (ha!), so why not play the game by your own rules? That being said, we do hope that we can attract some players new to the genre too. After all it is a nice genre. It’s just that its fans have not been treated very well in the past, uhh, ten years or so… But we are doing our best to ease their plight!
So. Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawl game. It will be influenced by oldschool games of the genre but it won’t be a game that would have been possible to make fifteen years ago. It will look great, have loads of atmosphere, sound good and play well. We won’t be making many promises during the development since things will often change down the line, but those aforementioned parameters I can pretty much guarantee. And lastly, we’re hoping on bringing this game for iOS, PC and Mac and possibly some other platforms as well. |

Do my eyes deceive me? I think not. Is this a first person dungeon crawler I see there!?
Oh the days spent in Eye of the Beholder and the like... good times were had. Until you got lost because there was no map function.

Oh. It only started development recently. Guess we'll see it sometime in 2013 then |
It's realtime, which will annoy Wizardry fans. though lands of lore, eotb and might and magic were also realtime. Just Wizardry that wasn't.
For me though, it's looking like a day one purchase.

Actually - Might and magic 1-2 was not real time..and if im not all wrong, MM3-5 was kind of turnbased in the way that for every move you made the enemy made a move aswell. |
I stand corrected MM6 was the first realtime MM game.
Also I can't believe I failed to mention Albion. Thinking about that game makes me want to go and replay it

And MM6 is THE rpg...the best one i've ever played next to bards tale and wastelands It never leaves my hd and I play through it once a year or so. |
Indeed, I have a personal goal of going through MM4 through 8 before my vacation ends in a couple of weeks, strictly speaking the later MM games had a turnbased mode you could enable though, which do you prefer realtime or the turnbased mode?
find the turnbased mode to make the game a bit harder and thus more fun myself.

Turn-based here for me too. I can't count the amount of hours I spent in games like MM4, Hired Guns and Wizardry. Am I missing something though? Where's the love for MM9?

Awesome, but the only thing that makes me a little sad - fantasy setting. It would be so great to have Hired Guns remade the same way

So, 4 people with a background in art and no game design experience? They intend to release this in the next few months after 6 weeks of work, and also as a Smartphone game?
I smell quick indie cash-in with pretty visuals.
I'll be looking at their next game - and I'll see if they actually care about gameplay and other such trivial matters.

Games don't take 5 years to create because of how awesome their gameplay is, it's all in the presentation.. models, textures, sounds, music, etc, all of which should be easy to do for an old school dungeon crawler which really has just 1 kind of environment, no models for characters other than the monsters, and a low or non existent amount of dialogue.
Also that a smartphone version is gonna be there as well makes perfect sense as the controls for such a game are very simple and as such it perfectly fits the control scheme of a smartphone. It's only natural for them to go there if the engine can do it.
Not saying that it's gonna be awesome, because I don't know, but judging the game based on it's low development time is not fair.
Likot Mosuskekim, Woodcutter cancels Sleep: Interrupted by Elephant.

I'm not saying it should take 5 years.
Also, I have no doubt it will work OK as a derivative dungeon crawler. It's just that I think I need something more to be interested.
I played these games many years ago, and I think it would be nice to see some evolution.
The genre basically stopped evolving with Ultima Underworld and Arx. Playing a "pretty" Smartphone Dungeon Master won't do much to excite me.
The fact that they're all artists with no design experience - tells me I shouldn't get my hopes up.
But to each their own.

Maybe I should re-check Captive again. Back in the days, I have found it quite boring and ridiculously hard, but Hired Guns I liked very much, different types of heroes ala cyborgs that can breath underwater, each with their unique equipment, inventory items that could be damaged by environment or by damage taken.
Father and I even played death matches against each other
