So yeah, i'm wondering about my experience with Crysis 3.. which was about 2months ago. In the 2nd level once you got to the huge open area with the grass, it dropped my fps in the 30s. .gpu usage close to 50-60%.. tried all settings on low same thing. Once i got past that it was smooth pretty much, still pissed me off so i gave up on the game and uninstalled.

Now thing is, in almost every other game i played (except Skyrim in cities with lots of mods to add tons of objects), gpu usage stays in the 90% +.
I tried finding info on the net about crysis3 and i read that even people with 5ghz ocs were having issues in the 2nd level. Then i see others saying they got none and game is smooth as silk. So many bullshitters on the internet tho you don't know who to trust.

I'm kinda wondering if i should bother upgrading to a new cpu but mind you i'd have to replace my mobo as well to get one of the new haswells.
Kinda regret not buying a 2500k cpu now + a slightly more expensive mobo to allow me to OC.. but hey what can you do.

PS: I'm also curious if a faster cpu with an eventual OC would help a lot in cases like Skyrim cities (example) or WoW for that matter (again from what i read it doesn't help much but rather hear it from someone who actually tested things or knows more on the subject first-hand).

I'm not that good at these things but for gaming I think it's very game or maybe game-engine dependent, just how well the developers have managed to utilize the CPU or how to say.

You would definitively notice a improvement upgrading but in some games it might not help as much since say the game would only utilizes two cores fully or such.

Now with Intel releasing updated models of some of their CPU's you can probably get the previous ones at a very good price range. Smile
(Though it would need updating the motherboard and possibly the RAM as well, RAM prices should have gone down a bit again though as far as I know.)

EDIT: As for Crysis 3 I think the grass is most draining on the GPU but I don't remember that well (So I'm probably completely wrong.) however I do remember that the grass sections (Especially on the second level where it's showcased the most.) were very demanding, probably that grass effect is still quite straining on current high-end hardware.
(You can use a system.cfg file to tweak it so that only grass very close to you is active or that the calculations are simplified which can bring a nice boost to the framerate without too much of a noticeable visual difference.)

Thing is as far as i read the grass "physics" are cpu calculated or something. I mean it was clearly a cpu bottleneck in those places considering my gpu usage dropped in the 60%'s.

Even when lowering resolution/everything else to low it still stayed at that.

But yeah main problem is i'd have to get a new cpu+mobo as well. Wonder if i'd be able to get anything for my current cpu+mobo. Never bothered selling them before, i just put them in my gf's PC .. she's no avid gamer so doesn't care that much bout performance but won't say no to free upgrades and i couldn't ba with finding buyers for my sh pieces.

there is a "bug" in Crysis 3 that doesn't change default windows timer to 1 like most games and leaves it at 10. this makes C3 run like shit on some CPU configurations with low cpu usage.

get TimerResolution app, set timer to 0.5 and leave app running, launch C3 and see if you have any improvement. this helped me tremendously as well as many other people. might help you as well Wink
