Grabbed this on Steam yesterday on a whim. So far its been awesome! Basically, it's a modernized (if somewhat, at least so far, easier) successor to Uplink. You get a GUI, but anything that's worth doing is done via console cmds (and you better memorize them, because, well, stuff happens! ) It's chock full of easter-eggs and references to its predecessor for you to discover as well!
If you were the fan of Introversion's Uplink at all, or hacking "sims" (I use that term loosely of course) then this is totally worth the $8!
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

What I really didn't like about the other "successors" to Uplink were the heavy reliance on scenarios instead of a sandbox, and their 100% reliance on console commands. I can overlook the second, but the first were always a huge letdown. So...is it a series of canned missions, or does it follow the Uplink formula, and give you a virtual net to play around in, getting random missions whenever you please?
Oh well. I wish Introversion would do an Uplink 2. I know they won't, but I'd love to have another sandbox hacking game, and since nobody seems to be able to do it like Uplink, they could fill this void so well. Hell, they could make it multiplayer...that would kick some serious ass.

Yeah, can imagine playing bank and getting 'hacked' by thousands of scrubs with Level 1 software It would have to be instanced.
Yea - unfortunately this doesn't have any sort of financial or upgrade elements to it. Your basic system, memory allotment and all, is what you're stuck with. However, as the story progresses, and depending on how much you poke around (not everything is in plain sight - reading logs to dig up IP's, usernames, decryption passwords often yields some cool, or funny stuff), you get access to different programs to run.
Basically, you do a certain number of scripted contract missions to advance the story - you can do the extra ones if you so desire, but there's no real incentive apart from maybe finding some cool shit or an exe buried on some server.
The soundtrack is quite decent - the only problem being that it only changes when the main "mission" your on changes, so it can get kind of repetitive.
Honestly though, some elements of this are deeper than I remember Uplink being - file and server manipulation for one. You can edit txt strings, certain html files etc., and are often required to do so in missions. The method of doing it is clunky though replace "TXTSTRING1" "WITHTXTSTRING2".

Spiritual successor to Uplink and 2nd best hacking game ever Hacknet [official site] is getting a 3-4 hour expansion pack at the end of the year. Hacknet Labyrinths injects a new gang of cyberpunks into the game, led by a fella called Kaguya who wants some favours from you. Considering it only takes about 7 or 8 hours to complete the base game, that’s a chunky bit of extra stuff.
In Labyrinths you’ll be joining a group of elite hackers as they plan and execute a series of “data heists” across the net. There are some new tools, such as the Memory Analyzer, but don’t ask me what that does. And you’ll use an IRC style chat system to talk to your new criminal buddies, whereas before it was all email. Meanwhile, the original stuff has more secrets and tidbits added as well.
