Fantastic news! I felt shooting for AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA quality was what harmed BioShock: Infinite the most.
For those bored enough to click the link:
Quote: | To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience.
I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it. I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition. |
Quote: | In time we will announce a new endeavor with a new goal: To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally. |
System Shock 3 pls.

Oh and the "To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable" part should make all those people insisting BioShock: Infinite should lose the shooting mechanics and just become an interactive movie/adventure very happy.

Hmm, well... yeah... these seem more like great news to me than sad / bad ones. I can definitely see where he's coming from when Ken says all of that. Being AAA these days is more of a thing that's holding devs back than anything else. Not even sure I care about what games they'll be doing now, but good luck to him and his new team regardless. The only game from them that I liked was Infinite as far as I remember and even that was a one-time thing that still had its problems, which were exactly because of it being such a big title on the As scale.

Wow, this is a shame I loved Binfinite and Bioshock and the thought of that universe continuing without Irrational at the helm is not great.

This makes me a bit sad, what does this mean for Bioshock's future?

^^ This x 50... need more cerebral games like SS1 and 2 and less of the brain-dead spoon-fed entertainment plaguing modern gaming...
Utilizing even a modern-era UNREAL 4 engine a SS3 game could be utterly gawd-like and the ultimate sci-fi horror gore-fest we've all been waiting for where you actually.. gasp.. HAVE TO THINK TO PLAY IT!!! [SACRIELGE!!!!!!!!!]

I don't understand why so many like the Bioshock games, their gunplay is just bad. I mean it feels bad as a first person shooter, the enemies move unrealistically and don't respond to getting hit properly, using the powers is unsatisfying. There is no impact and the collision detection is made for consoles.
I cannot get into them, the starting (1 hour) of BioInfinite disgusted me, it's everything I don't want from an FPS, so very uninteresting and generic/streamlined as FUCK gameplay.
Bioshock 2 was the best imo, at least it had passable shooting.
And yeah, this masturbation with delivering multimillion dollar content is annoying, don't know where all that money goes, but not to the game enginners, that's for sure. Voice actors and motion capture actors and equipment while the player is handheld through doors probably or watching some amaezeing ingame cutscene while doing nothing. AAA titles just seem to have shit budget management, or there's just too many leeches profitting from them. What would 4A games make with that budget ?

I doubt all the employees will be out of jobs for long. 2K is not going to abandon the Bioshock franchise.

If this really means less "accessible" games, then it's not a bad news after all. Though it remains to be seen who is this "core audience" exactly.
I hope they leave Bioshock alone, because without him it will be a disaster.

Well, it certainly can't get any worse with that franchise.

Well, I fully expect to see a kickstarter pop up from whatever studio rises from its ashes.

I think he is going to focus on Logan's Run (movie--maybe game) But I hope this opens up time for him to write the screenplay.

It says he's keeping a partnership with Take Two, so I think it would be lame for him to go to Kickstarter when he's already working with a publisher.

Loved Bioshock 1 and Infinite - the closest I can get to actually liking a shooter, so not really happy to see the news. Let's hope something good comes out of it in the form of a new IP.

Ah you're listening to the core gamers now? Okay! SWAT 5, Freedom Force 3 and System Shock 3 please (or spiritual successors).

They'll use kickstarter as a sort of popularity gauge like other devs have done already. See how much of a demand there is for some game by seeing how many are willing to plunk down their money in advance. Then they'll fund it traditionally after that. I.e. they'll just use kickstarter as a pre-order mechanism.
