I must say that this list pretty much agrees with my own preferances.

Yeah, it looks quite decent.

Although having TES Morrowind as #7 and TES Daggerfall as #35 raises some questions Very Happy

Is Planescape: Torment really that good? I wanted to play it twice now, but the begging really put me off as did the combat system...

I'm a sucker for a good story, but i just can't get this game going...

An interesting topic I stumbled upon recently.

No bards tale on that list..bah!

Also, Mandate Of Heaven should be way higher on that list imo.

Ofc, this is all about personal taste Razz

Edit: Id also like to see Champions Of krynn on that list...and other EDD games.

A lot of good games on the list but a lot missing too. And it's a pretty small sample as far as votes. I don't agree with the order of a lot of games on there and some just make me think "WTF?"

And no Bard's Tale games (the original 3, not the newer inxile one)? grrrr

You need a few more than 234 people to decide what the best games are (IMHO). It also matters what the demographics of those 234 people are. In the top 14 the oldest game is from 1997.

Edit: They address this in their own post.

Quote:

There's a lot of cry about how the older gems are overlook by the Codex. It's know that the average user here is in his 25-30's, so is understandable that games releases in the late 90's are part of their golden years. To help balance things out, here's a different version of the above list, now divided into Pre & Post-1995:

It has one of the best stories in any game I've played. The only issue is the game crashes in some areas on modern PC's when using the high res mod, and that mod is almost mandatory for anyone using a large monitor. I tried various workarounds I found on the modding forums and nothing helped.

JRPGs can have their own lists, they have more differences than similarities with western RPGs.

Not necessarily. Some jRPGs (e.g. Weltorv Estleia, Lunatic Dawn(s), Taiko Risshiden V, Romancing Saga(s), Z'ill Oll, Oriental Blue) have as much nonlinearity and c&c as the most open western RPGs - the problem is that most of them are untranslated.

Great list, by the way.

I bought the game at release and couldn't get into it back then. I was more of a Baldur's Gate type of guy. About a year or two ago I finally got back to PS:T and actually really did enjoy the story. It's something that required maturity on my part, maybe. That being said...I still hated the combat system and felt it kept it from being tops in my book. If you listen to Matt Chat's interview with Chris Avellone you will see he talks about "reverses" in the game, in the sense he wanted to turn everything upside-down. This idea worked amazingly well for the story and characters, but it should have not applied to the combat, lol.

Exactly, so for lists like these those titles might just as well not exist at all.

Man, M&M6 was so badass. I played M&M with friends (they gave input, I controlled) and each one was legendary for its own reasons but I have a particular fondness for VI. World of Xeen was a masterpiece, don't get me wrong, but VI had that new engine that really pushed the limits of what that type of game could do back then.

I agree with about half of the top 50. There are a lot of omissions from the Amiga/C64 era, and even some from the DOS era. You go back and play those games now and realize how precisely and lovingly they were crafted - something you can sometimes get from indie games again - and you start to realize that so many gamers today never got to experience those titles in quite the same way...it's something that can never be replicated, only imitated.

Good to see a healthy amount of SSI games on the list. I loved that shit when I was a kid. Hell, I still love it.

But I can't see how anyone in his right mind could ever consider Alpha Protocol to be reasonably the 29th best crpg of all time. I mean, I liked the game, but still...

I guess some people will suck down any level of rancid dick that Obsidian shoves down their throats and claim it's fucking honey.

I wish you'd stop being close minded and learn that different coutries use different systems. Some countries use comma, not full stop, for decimal fractions.

Its the Codex, they don't give a rat's ass about technical problems or gameplay issues. It is all about dialogues, story, choices.

Umm, the story was full of plotholes, and if you played it in the "wrong" order some of the shit didn't make any sense.

edit: And half of the story played out like some crackhead anime addict's fanfic. Sis and SIE in particular.

I mean I liked the game, but it was absolutely not some kind of amazingly written story.

@dannofdawn Yup and once you push aside the technical issues, Alpha Protocol was fucking incredible. Still one of my favourites and I constantly lament the lack of a sequel/follow up Sad

Totally and utterly this. The amount of reactivity to choices made by the player is also pretty amazing.
