Eschalon Book one
* Official web page: LINKLINK
* Publisher: Basilisk Games
* Developer: Basilisk Games
* Genre: RPG
* Release date: November 19, 2007
* Protection: ?
* Media type and size: ?
* Story/Description and Features:
Eschalon: Book I is a classic role-playing game experience that will take you across massive outdoor environments and deep into sprawling dungeons as you seek to uncover the mystery of who - or what - you are.
A tile-built, turn-based game world where the result of absolutely every action is rolled, calculated or statistically determined. Strategy is paramount to success; careful skill management, equipment selection and magic usage will win your fights, not rapid button clicking. We are very pleased to say this is not another "action RPG".
Hundreds of items and dozens of creatures await your discovery. A combination of randomly generated treasure and carefully hidden goodies means that no two games will play the exact same way.
Unlimited character development style: Choose from 24 unique skills to make the character you want and 8 base attributes that affect your character's every action throughout the game. The game world does not scale or adjust itself to match anyone's play style, so the ease or difficulty of the game is directly related to how successful you are at developing your character.
Combat plays out at your pace. Eschalon: Book I features a turn-based system that allows you to roll through combat as fast or slow you want...make it fast and furious, or analyze every option for maximum advantage.
A non-linear storyline means that the game world is open to explore as you desire. Follow the storyline or don't...it's up to you. Just be careful where you go and who you choose to trust- the world of Eschalon can be a deadly place for an inexperienced adventurer.
An epic adventure that you must face alone...a single-player RPG carefully designed to feel like the great old school RPGs of the past such as Ultima®, Might & Magic®, and Wizardry®.

Tried the demo. I strongly encourage everyone to buy this indie game (that is, if you like it, don't pirate it). It's very oldschool RPG game with turn based combat (works a bit like fallout, and a bit like roguelikes). Nice graphics (unfortunately only low-res). Nice story so far and pretty well written. Not too many bugs, although it has some minor annoyances - like inability to speed up you character movement a bit (this should be optional). Has better graphics than Avernum or Geneforge, which I like a lot too.
To sum it up - I like this game. I've grown up playing ultimas (well, my age shows... I'm almost 32 now). For me it's a bit of nostalgic fun.

Patch 1.03 is out ...
For my Eschalon was a delusion ...
I'm not a special effects fanboy, i have grown up with Ultima and Bard's tale but nowadays i'm no more able to have fun with games without a minimal goodness level of gfx/snd/gui.
And men, a fixed 800x600 resolution nowadays with nearly everyone having a 17" or 19" especially the lcd ones (for me it's 19" lcd), well it's really a pain in the eyes !
A blurring full screen or a stamp like window !? OMG ...
Well i'll try to use it as a spare time office roguelike, it should fit for that ...
Hope voices for the increase in resolution for the book 2 will be confirmed.
Since we are on subject, for all of you out there grown up in the old days of rpgs ... are you still able nowadays to have as much fun as in those days with games with gfx/snd/gui that, for one reason or another, you find insufficient or worse ?

Y i do. Im playing Arcanum atm and i finsihed Planescape torment couple of weeks ago. Im big fan of D&D(i know that Arcanum isnt D&D) and i dont give a crap about gfx. Never liked Ultima because i dont like rpgs where you need to be good. Rpg isnt about gfx or voices atleast isnt for me. Its about story,paths you can take and fighting mechanics. Old games have something special to them. I finished The gene machine(adventure) couple of days ago and i cant remebar last time i had such a good laugh playing a game. Atm im playing The last express and its really unique experience. Story is moving foward no matter what you do. Every time you start over you can do almost everything different. Its really something special. So i think its about youre state of mind and forming a opinion based on gfx.

Worst RPG ever. The writting is so boring,
it's like this - "monsters came out from underground, you must do some quests, like fighting 10 monsters and fetching a candle"
I mean if the game has awful gameplay, awful music, awful graphics, then at the very least
they should have someone that's not an awful writer do the writing.
The writting here is worse then in most of those japanese RPG's, and that's something.
Burn them all Adolf

Well, yes, I played a bit and changed my opinion about this game. It bored me after a few hours. Writing isn't good, combat is boring and difficulty level is a bit unpredictable (most fights are easy, some are impossible and the game doesn't give you any hints before). Avernum series is MUCH better. And recently Avernum 5 came out (on a Mac, but I use a Mac).

@ nakitu : well i liked very much Arcanum too, but it was after that "minimal line of technical goodness" i mentioned, i mean it was (for the time it was made) nice for the type of game. But what i wanted to tell (it's difficult sometimes when you have to write complex thinkings ) wasn't only related to gfx (or snd), think to something like the concept, story and theorical gameplay of the game from one side, and all the interface that permits to you to interact with it to the other side (gfx/snd and, maybe the most important, the gui) ... is a good concept etc etc enough for having fun even with a poor or even bad way of interacting with it ?
I mean, as time passes, i get used to some technical improvements that for me they become necessary to appreciate an rpg, my typical example is the automap: nowadays a game that would force me to draw maps like when i was playing Eye of the beholder (man what incredible years were those ???) would probably get erased in ten minutes. That was the kind of debate i wanted to ask you: would you ignore any even great flaws in the gfx/snd/gui if the concept behind is good for you ?
@ adaml75 : i'm waiting Avernum 5 for trying once more if i can go over the engine limitations (see my babbling above) and appreciate it ... has it any improvements in respect to the fourth one ? Aside the tech part that i suppose it's the same.
Sorry for the long post folks

My view of Arcanum is much more different then yours. I have spent an houre on creating my character.So many things you could decide that are simply lacking in todays game. From amount of races that give different benefits to perks and magic/science. There are so many things that you can be at start. Its mindblowing for todays standards. I dont even wanna mention the music which is perfect.

Ok i understand you now better. Well i for one can overlook many things that are considered normal by todays standards. For example going in shop and buying stuff. In old games you couldnt see what bonuses does weapon or armour give or if they are better then the ones you are wearing atm. Or that retarded drag and drop on youre character. No slots no nothing.Items didnt have explanation what they do etc. Not all games had maps and that is really annoying but on the other hand you now have internet. You can check all the maps and see where you are so its not that big of a problem.On the other hand most rpgs had awesome music and voice. Its mind blowing compared to todays crappy voices or lame music. Games had their limits on what could be done but i can still have great fun with them.
