Developer Petroglyph has announced it’s working on Grey Goo, a new real-time strategy game that blends established gameplay mechanics with modern design and tools.
Petroglyph says Grey Goo will draw on the best aspects of base building, unit management, and all-out war in an all new space saga. It promises to remove the frustration often associated with the genre and focus on deep, tactical systems based on classic RTS gameplay.
The game will feature three factions: The Beta, Human, and Goo, each with its own strategies and powerful “epic” units that tower over the battlefield, which you can play in either a single-player campaign or competitive multiplayer mode. Grey Goo’s AI, Petroglyph said, is based on real-world Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) concepts, and will make every match unique rather than run off of scripts.
“We have a rich, lengthy background as RTS developers, dating all the way back to our time on the original Command & Conquer at Westwood Studios,” Executive Producer at Petroglyph Ted Morris said. “We want to bring back some of what made those ‘traditional’ RTS games great while addressing all the lessons we've learned along the way.”
I was a bit sceptical after EON but this looks quite interesting!
Looks a bit like Earth 2160 but without the hero units and rock-paper-scissors armor gimmicks (which I didn't like that much - Earth 2150 was the superior game imho with the weather and day night cycles. Also not as shiny and colourfull )
I really like the resource system. For years I have been wondering why I can't just select how much harvesters I want and let the game handle it from that point forward...
Anyone know if there will be some decent defensive wall, tower and turret build options?
I don't get why everyone didn't lead off with this. When i first saw this thread i took a very superficial look and thought meh (essentially only looking quickly through the screenshots tbh). The fact that it's the former Westwood guys makes me want to give it a shot.
I loved their previous work in the genre so.

The walls look really stupid. What is the point of having a wall (and even a gate) if you have a huge open area right next to it?
Oh, maybe the flowers will prevent units from crossing the empty area without walls...
More noteworthy news about the game is that we've re-evaluated our release time frame. With the holidays being such a busy game release time, we've decided to stand apart from the crowd and launch Grey Goo in early 2015!
We have a lot yet to show you about Grey Goo in the next couple of months, including plenty of backstory and lore about the three factions, as well as developer diaries on how the game was originally crafted with the spirit of the RTS genre in mind.
The developers agreed that they are well overdue won sharing information on the development state of the game but confirmed that is not the case anymore. The game is almost here; January 23, 2015 will see the Steam release!
Instead of more on the Alpha or a Beta, we are going to get the full release in less than a month’s time:
We know that many of you were hoping to be involved in a more full-blown Beta Testing phase. However, instead, we have been focused on using the data we received to improve the game so that we can get Grey Goo into your hands and onto your computer as soon as possible.
Therefore, we are happy to announce that Grey Goo will be released on Steam, January 23rd, 2015!
I fucking hate this situation, which became a trend now - releasing a game in beta state and patching it later or not while devs or publisher gets full money for half-assed product.

These guys are skipping beta testing because of launching fast. That is NOT good. That will kill the game.
from what i understood they are not skipping Beta phase overall but just skipping some kind of open-beta/Early access kind of deal , not the internal one, because of unexpectedly succesfull alpha/intrnal beta 1 tests
