I think it depends on what type of horror you want.
I find most of the violent horror films funny (and generally dull) but I love the 'creepy' ones, like some listed above, but others find some of the slasher ones scary, I just dont see it.

Yes! Insidious was great! Some other good suggestions as well.
Also surprised no one mentioned it, a great fucking movie with an excellent mind fuck..

I really liked the descent, conjuring was real nice too.
rosemarys babbby.
evil dead 1 when it first came out, now its seen as a comedy.
look past that. the tension in that movie and the atmos is awesome.
poltergeist was a nice series.
suspiria is nice.
ringu 2 (only for scene which was really well done. scared me when i was 17)
thirst is nice.
cronos is more of a thriller but it has some nice horror bits.
event horizon is in the same vein as saw.
any horror movie that relies heavily on cgi or practical fx instead of story/atmos is shit.
it depends what kind of horror you want... gore horror? re-animator. scary horror suspria. in between? evil dead

I really liked mama, so my vote for that one...
If you're fine with something like event horizon, then maybe pandorum?

Why would anyone be a nerd for disliking the paranormal activity movies? I found them to be quite cheap and boring. Also I dislike it if people act stupid just so that the script can go on... But if she doesn't like creepy or violent, she'll probably like the PA movies
The first (spanish) REC was fun (but bloody) and I'd also like to +1 for Event Horizon.
