Towns brings a fresh new take on the citybuilding/management genre by introducing many RPG features.
Drawing inspiration from games such as Diablo, Dungeon Keeper and Dwarf Fortress, the game has you managing a settlement on top of an active dungeon. Instead of playing the hero who delves deep into the dungeon, how about playing the town that houses and caters to the hero's needs?
Both the RPG and strategic aspects will be fleshed out over a series of sprawling dungeons.
Craft unique weapons, obtain randomized loot and build a settlement capable of holding back the forces that come up from the depths!
Multiplayer: i dunno
System requirements:
Quote:
JAVA 1.6. WINDOWS XP/Vista/7 32/64 bits, LINUX, MAC OSX. OpenGL 1.1
I have to admit I have not played it yet, but this game certainly looks interesting to me. Currently its in early alpha and apparently very playable. No release date set, however you can preorder now saving about 40%.

Damn, 10€ is a bit too much for this at the current stage imho. It looks cool and fun but I expected a 5€ PO or something. Well, I'll keep an eye on it.
this is like minecraft++ ^^ except you control a bunch of (minecraft) players to do your bidding ^^
actually, first off, you don't ever control a character directly, only the orders the collective as a whole follows which leads me to...
secondly, it's not like minecraft because you die of starvation simply because the food is uncooked and therefore your characters refuse to eat it when they begin to starve.
decent enough game though, not starving definitely needs to be higher on the AI's task list though, just mining out a large enough area at once will force you into a starvation game over due to how low it is on the list of importance.
about all you can say?
it's kinda like dwarf fortress's less ugly, more personable sister, you could date the former.... but who's that crazy..
i wish they would change the damn graphics.... i LOVED dwarf fortress and the ascii, it looked "right" it looked good, aesthetics, but the graphics in towns are too damn ugly, the images look like some 1995 hentai game , wish they would get some better drawn images =|
still havent played it, bought it in desura along with the Dwarf game, Raiders of something..
to be blunt I have a good and a bad news for you. Let me begin with the bad one as this is really a tough one:
I want to be completly honest with you guys, because I think as faithful fans of Towns you deserve to know the facts. The only
thing I ask for is that you read my entire post and not just a few sentences. If you are angry at me after you read it that's
okay, just go ahead and post a comment.
When I signed up for working on Towns I was told that we sell a minimum of about x copies/month of the game. I agreed to work on Towns
for 15% of what would remain after removing all the taxes and the Steam fee. Xavi and I agreed that this would be a fair amount, and I still
think it is.
After getting used to the source code and publishing the first new version of the game, we talked about the agreed payment and it turns out that
the sells are getting down rapidly. So we are now selling less than a third of the x copies a month, loosing about 33% of sells per month.
To be completely honest, I can't work for that little amount. I have to pay for the rent and food and this doesn't really suffice
for any of it I also settled for the 15% of the minimum of x copies which is already well below my normal sallary.
As some of you might know I already have a project that I'm not paid for (yet), so at the moment I can't really afford having another one of
that kind. So if I don't really get paid for it then I would pledge for rather making Towns open source. That way I could still contribute
to it (without payment) and have other people help me with that. But that is a decision that I have very little to say about ...
I hope you are not too disappointed. And if you are: I'm really sorry. I'm quite new to indie game dev and I couldn't really see that the
game sales were declining that rapidly. I guess if I had more experience I would have seen it comming ...
But after all Towns is a really great game and after reading through all your suggestions I realized that Towns as an idea
has a lot of further potential. But the current game would need a lot of heavy changes to make them happen. And for
that the game is just not new enough. But that brings me to that good news I mentioned at the beginning:
Xavi and I were talking about a possible Towns2. At the moment this is just in an idea stage and we can't really say if he, I or
eventually Ben have the time to create a Towns2. As faithful fans of Towns we would of course reward you in some way, when/if the
new game is released.
A new game will give us the following advantages:
we can implement all the cool things that are not possible at the moment due to how the core mechanics works in Towns 1
we can also rise attention as this is a completely new game and a successor for once great runnning game
this will also make it possible to have a financially sound basis for a long development of Towns2
I want to end this post by thanking you for reading this and for all your support in these two months. Again I'm sorry
that we had to pull the plug right here, but I sincerely hope you can understand why we had to make that decision right
now.
Hardly surprising that their sales dropped off after all the in house arguing and the speed of updates getting slower and slower. A shame because it had such potential
Like most have already said stay clear of it, if you can stomach the learning curve Dwarf fortress is the daddy of this genre, if not then Gnomoria is a great Dwarf Fortress clone, a lot simpler but far easier to learn and still is tons of fun.
Yeah, I owned it before it was on steam, I bought it on Desura. Back then though their forums were very active even with the devs joining in. Updates were once every few weeks maybe a month at most but it started to slow down. Rumors started that the dev had given up or got bored which he denied, then he hired a new guy to continue the development and very few updates came out after that.
Like you say it was word of mouth which killed it, but it was mostly their own fault that those words were so toxic. back before all the shit it had a quite a bright outlook
Another example of why Early Access, or "crowdfunding", is a bad idea for the most part. There's just too much chance of developers getting bored or just giving up on the game before it finishes
as you may know I decided some months ago that the game was finished. Some of you agreed and a some of you disagreed. My reasons was simple, add new features to the game won't make a difference in it and you always will ask for more, so I took my decision.
After posting that and read your replies, I decided to hire someone to continue with the game (Moebius). We agreed to give the new dev a 15% on sales, that was a fair ammount considering the past month sales, a bit less taking into account the february sales. I also thought that with the active development of the game the sales will grow up, but they didn't.
So, well, now we are like 2 months ago, no developer. Well, we are worse than 2 months ago, because we gave you some hope and now all seems over.
But, well, I think still there are some good news to you. There is a well known player who works for one of the bigger gaming companies and he has expressed an interest to get the Towns rights and continue the development. I still can't tell you the company name, but I can assure you is a good well known one.
In the upcoming days we will try to reach an agreement, so, please, I ask you for a little more patience.
If we can't reach an agreement I will, again, hire someone to continue the development. I know you may lost the hope about the hirings but I want to try it again.
Regards
Xavi
Depends on who this mystery company is really as to whether i have any hope. He did say a GOOD well known one, that narrows the list down a bit and put EA out of the equation

He decided the game was finished, pissed off his entire customer base, employed a new Dev to continue development and wondered why the sales of the game slumped. If I recall sales were actually pretty good before he pulled the EA maneuvre. Something like 300k sales which is no small number for an indie dev.
If a new deal is made I really hope this cock has no dealings with its future development.
