EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 4.1 The Shadow of New Despair

  • Developer: Sandlot
  • Genre: Action, Third-person shooter
  • Release date: 18 July, 2016
  • Story/Description:
    Quote:
It's a fight for the future of the planet between the Ravagers, a merciless swarm of alien invaders, and the Earth Defense Force (EDF) in this third-person shooter.

As an EDF soldier you will go head to head in fierce combat against the hordes of giant alien insects and their slaughtering machines.

Play as four different classes in over 80 missions with a range of 800 weapons at your disposal.

The most overwhelmingly numerous forces of Ravagers the series has ever seen will take the EDF fighters to the depths of despair and back!

    Online co-op play supported.

  • Steam page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/410320/

I admit these EDF games are janky as hell but it's some of the best co-op games I've ever played (excluding Insect Armageddon, made by a different dev). Very Happy

Interesting they went without xseed this time

might be some nice fun ... althopugh the price is kinda high

also seems mlike the Insaect Armageddon game was some kind of spinoff
from RPS:
Quote:
It’s a revamped version of Earth Defense Force 2025, which isn’t nearly as good a name. We’ve only seen EDF on PC once before so the novelty hasn’t worn off for me and yeah, I think I am up for rampaging around Japan shooting massive hordes of space-monsters with my pals.

The Shadow of New Despair updates 2025 with fancied-up graphics, new weapons, a spider bot buddy, new missions, and tweaks to old missions. Also, y’know, it’s on Windows.

Unlike Insect Armageddon, the previous EDF game, 2025 is again made by series creators Sandlot

Early Port report:
    - Internal Resolution is locked at 1080p in missions, though oddly in the options screen (which has a 3d model) downsampling seems to work.
    - Framerate is locked to 60. So far I haven't had it drop a single frame, even when shit is going completely bananas.
    - Anti-aliasing like downsampling only seems to work in the options screen, in game it's super jaggy.
    - Mouse and keyboard controls are great, no mouse acceleration of any kind.

Hopefully a scene release comes soon too, or at least someone puts up some non-torrent downloads. grinhurt

Very nice my man!

Just tested the game and played the first mission only. Will play more later.

As Vryder wrote, the game really is rather janky. But i still very enjoyed the bit i played. Very Happy

Might have considering buying it for coop. But even the ~9.6€ in India are a bit too much for what i'm willing to pay. Also the amount of DLCs. Embarassed

Still downloading....but I liked that crappy Insect Armageddon....can't really put my finger on why I like these Earth Defense games....but I play them a lot!! Haha....probably the simpleton gameplay and braindead features from mission to mission....I can just play and get glazed over....excellent time killer...kinda like this post!!

The DLCs aren't really essential, it's just low level weapons that quickly become useless later on.

Yea the EDF games are fucking addictive, especially in coop, it helps that there are hundreds of crazy upgradable weapons, at times you wil replay missions just to try out your new weapon of mass destruction Laughing

Played the first 18 missions so far.

Yea it looks like shit, but for some reason it's still very addictive. Very Happy
Maybe because of the loot?

Tried all classes, but the soldier seems most fun and agile so far.

- BTW can you upgrade weapons, or have you just keep looting them during missions and hope you get a better variant?

- And what exactly does a level on a weapon mean?

You can only get better weapons from drops. Do note that you have to manually pick up the weapons/armor drops before the mission ends or it just goes to waste (hint: leave 1-2 enemies alive while you pick up the loot). The level on a weapon is just a vague indicator of how good it is. Basically, the higher the difficulty mode and the mission level, the better weapon drops you will get. Although it's a good idea to work your way up starting from Normal. Starting on the highest difficulty with low HP and crap weapons is suicide since enemies will seem like bullet sponges and they can kill you in one hit.

@Vryder
Thanks!

Yea, those loot crates are a bit annoying TBH. Especially those armor pickups, that give a measily +1 per crate.

And how many people can play at once in co-op?

NOPE.

I barely see a difference with my preset. Only SMAA is noticeable, as the game doesn't seem to have a built in AA solution.

Depends on the preset really making good presets takes a lot of time fine tuning.
