Press Release
Spoiler: | Thursday 18th February/... 2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), today announced that Sid Meier’s Civilization® V, the newest entry from the genre-defining strategy-based franchise, is currently in development at Firaxis Games for PC. Civilization V reinvigorates the classic turn-based strategy genre with an astonishing new engine built from the ground-up for this flagship edition of the Civilization franchise. Players are introduced to an entirely new combat system, deeper diplomatic interactions and a cavalcade of expanded features that deliver a fully immersive experience providing hours of entertainment as players build and defend their empire on their quest to become the greatest ruler the world has ever known.
Civilization V takes this definitive strategy game series in new directions with the introduction of hexagon tiles allowing for deeper strategy, more realistic gameplay and stunning organic landscapes for players to explore as they expand their empire. The brand new engine orchestrates a spectacular visual experience that brings players closer to the Civ experience than ever, featuring fully animated leaders interacting with players from a screen-filling diplomatic scene and speaking in their native language for the first time. Wars between empires feel massive as armies dominate the landscape, and combat is more exciting and intense than ever before. The addition of ranged bombardment allows players to fire weapons from behind the front lines, challenging players to develop clever new strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield. In addition to the new gameplay features debuting in Civilization V, an extensive suite of community, modding and multiplayer elements will also make an appearance.
“Sid Meier’s Civilization franchise has been recognized as one of the greatest PC game franchises of all time with millions of units sold worldwide,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Civilization V takes the franchise further by offering players a more immersive experience with deeper strategies; heightened tactical combat; vast, realistic landscapes to explore, battle over and claim as their own; and an in-game community hub where Civ fans can share content and compete against each other without leaving the game. This marks a new era that will forever change the franchise responsible for sleep deprivation and reduced productivity for nearly two decades.”
“Each new version of Civilization presents exciting challenges for our team,” said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. “Thankfully, ideas on how to bring new and fun experiences to Civ players never seem to stop flowing. From fully animated leaders and realistic landscapes, new combat tactics, expanded diplomacy and shared mods, we’re excited for players to see the new vision our team at Firaxis has brought to the series.”
In addition to Civilization V, Firaxis Games is also currently developing Sid Meier’s Civilization® Network™, a Civ game for Facebook. With Sid Meier leading design, Civilization Network will offer yet another option for world domination to both the casual gamer and the biggest fans of the series. It’s another way to access the famously addictive world of Civilization.

Description
Spoiler: | Sid Meier's Civilization franchise returns this fall with a fifth installment, featuring hexagon tile maps, a new combat system, deeper diplomatic options, and a community hub where players can share content and compete without leaving the game.
Civilization marches on relentlessly in the fifth installment of the classic strategy series, published by 2K Games and developed by the team at Firaxis. Civilization V features a completely new game engine, allowing for lush, organic landscapes unlike anything seen in the series previously.
With the new engine comes a new combat system, which might separate the casual Civ player from the hardcore. The new hexagon tiles scream war gaming to me, and that's not traditionally a genre for the stay-at-home mom. The new system promises more strategic options in battle, with new elements such as ranged bombardment sure to make combat much more interesting than it has been in the past.
More peaceful players should be pleased by the inclusion of fully animated leaders and deeper diplomatic options, while players seeking online interaction need look no further than the game's player hub, where community-created content can be swapped and multiplayer matches launched.
"Each new version of Civilization presents exciting challenges for our team," said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. "Thankfully, ideas on how to bring new and fun experiences to Civ players never seem to stop flowing. From fully animated leaders and realistic landscapes, new combat tactics, expanded diplomacy and shared mods, we're excited for players to see the new vision our team at Firaxis has brought to the series."
It sounds rather intense, but what of the more casual Civ players?
"In addition to Civilization V, Firaxis Games is also currently developing Sid Meier's Civilization Network, a Civ game for Facebook. With Sid Meier leading design, Civilization Network will offer yet another option for world domination to both the casual gamer and the biggest fans of the series. It's another way to access the famously addictive world of Civilization."
It looks like Firaxis is going in two different directions with the Civilization franchise. Which side will you be on? - Kotaku |

Civ 4 was fantasitic, as was Civ 3, I didnt like Civ 2 so much, but I adored Civ 1 (Lost so many hours in my younger days to Civ 1).
So I hope this is good too

Big fan of the previous game, obviously, and heartened to hear (from initial information anyway) that it it's gotten more depth added to it - not less. Can't wait.

Yay! Not much of a graphical update judging by that lowest pic, but as long as the gameplay is solid I'm sold.

Quote: | - Switch from squares to hexagons changing the way the game plays. More room for maneuvers and more tactical options.
- Changes to combat. More depth in combat, no more stacking of units. This will lead to bigger focus on terrain.
- Inspired by Panzer General.
- Reintroduction of Bombardment, now archers and siege equipment can shoot over melee units.
- Better diplomatic AI.
- More diplomatic options between players.
- Less "cheating" AI.
- Religion is not a factor anymore.
- Ressources are not infinite. For example one source of horse only supplies enough horses for 1 unit, but when that horseman dies the horses will respawn as a unit. (this confused me alittle, i guess we will have to watch it in action)
- City States as a sort of small countries that never develop beyond their single city. They can provide bonusses if you befriend them, or you can take over their land.
- Civics are out, now there is something called "Social Policies".
- About the same amount of wonders, the tech tree will feel familiar. Great People still in.
- Some victory conditions changed. For example in Conquest you only have to capture all the other capitals. Eliminates boring mop up phase.
- Unique Civ leader bonusses, no more standard "Spiritual" or "Financial".
- DirectX 11 support.
- Built in webbrowser. Sid Meier is also working on a facebook application of Civilization. |
Not sure I'm liking all the changes tbh, but we'll wait and see I guess. Hope they keep the game easily moddable, with xml structures etc.

Yo dawg, I heard you like Civ, so we put a browser in your game and a game-application in facebook, so you can play while you play !

What they are basicly saying, is that every resource node will maintain a set number of units? That can tip the balance of power rather quickly. Turtleing in MP will not really be an option. Hope it's going to be an on-off option.
The other things I can live with, some of them I welcome wholeheartedly..

I especially like the hexagons. Don't really know what to say about the other stuff though, guess I gotta try it first.

W00t for hexes! Long overdue IMO. Let's just hope they won't concentrate too much on combat and maneuver and give little love to other stuff.

Religion in Civ 4 was pretty shit. Could've just been abstracted into culture in some way. Yes, some mods make it a worthwhile concept, but if modability is anything close to Civ 4 it won't be hard to do similar stuff to the sequel.
