Sorry about the inches but that is how monitors are still measured for some reason. (I suspect the Americans Very Happy )

Anyway I currently have a 23.6 and was thinking of going for a 27". Would it really make a great deal of difference? I can't go for a high end monitor as my budget will not stretch that far, so it will not be better apart from the size.

For 3.5 " it hardly seems worth it, but opinions are appreciated.

i went from 1080p 24" TN to 1080p 27" IPS. it was worth it for two reasons, IPS rocks, bigger is better, and 1080p is perfect for gaming, no need for 1440p at all, and NO, you don't see individual pixels on 27" 1080p unlike some stupid internet myths want you to believe.

but of course if you have enough money to buy GPU setup to support smooth 1440p gaming then go for it.

No.
1080p in not enough at 23 without plenty of aa.
so at 27 1080p would be even worse

1440p @ 27"

Would not be able to use 1080p again now that I'm used to all the space.

High pixel density is also glorious.

utter nonsense. at home 27" 1080p, at work 27" 1440p. no problems. it's all about distance from the screen anyway. for gaming i like my screen further away so i can see more of screen at once, so pixel density isn't an issue. for work there is no arguing, 1440p always wins.

And here I thought computers and their monitors were fit for both gaming and general use (what you call work). You sure you don't have a 360 inside your tower?

1080p on a 27" monitor is useless unless you use it like TV, meaning you can't do anything on it but watch video and play games (because of high pixel size), and that's what consoles + TVs are.

Always fun reading the binary argument bullshit people spill on the internets. "At work I use the computer for computer, at home I game and don't do nothing else" lol wut Forgive me, is that not the same mentality that the console durrs use? "When I get home, I like to turn my brain off" and so on?

It is worth it! It opens up your use of the PC a lot more. It really is very difficult to go back. Get a nice Dell 27" IPS and you will not look back.

Any recommendations for 27" IPS (gaming/movie) monitors? Price range seems to go from ~220-500€ with very different ratings. I just need some input in which direction (brands/models) my research should be focused and what can be ignored.

I'm going to be upgrading my Dell 2209WA soon, i'm also 99% that it will be a Asus VX239H

The 27" would be overkill for my setup and viewing distance. Also i think the 23" be a better option close up at 1080p.

Honestly, once I went from 23" to 27" (long time ago now), I could never see myself going back. The difference was just that awesome to me.

I'm just pissed I couldn't find an affordable 1920x1200 monitor with everything I needed to replace the one that died on me and had to settle for 1920x1080 Sad

+1

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

16:10 owns Smile

I've stopped buying larger screens, it's impressive the first day, it gets "normalized" really quick.. I've even downgraded my TV (size wise), can't say i even notice it.

Got a ~80" screen (projector) for that special occasion when you want to play or watch something you've really waited for.. Since i dont use it daily it always feels epic/impressive Smile

Just thought i'd quote myself. I ended up buying the Asus VX239H. It looks a nice monitor sat on my desk, however i am not impressed with the overall picture quality coming from my dell 2209WA.
Even with the increase in resolution it doesn't look any better, in fact i much prefer my old dell. The Asus has terrible screen bleed in the bottom right corner that extends right to the middle of the screen. Colours seem off and i can't seem to calibrate to a satisfactory result.

Maybe this isn't the monitors fault but more the increased res, but fonts text ect seem sharp and blurry (if that makes sense!). In fact this monitor is very hard to use over long periods, i feel eye strain very quickly and find it generally uncomfortable to view.

Maybe it's a bad example but i'ts going back to Amazon and i'll buy a Dell U2414H and see how that looks. Luckily Amazon are quite good with returns and collect for free, no monies lost Smile
